    Good Sunday Mornin'

This morning I found myself muttering under my breath because the sun was hurting my eyes and I couldn't see through my muddy windshield and I didn't want to run over a calf that I knew must be in the grass somewhere close to the cow; I could see her. I had to bust out laughing at myself. Here...

    Cow Camps

Saddletramp, I just stumbled onto this post. I know the camp. Spent a few nights there, myself. I worked for Hub McMurtrey in the 80's. We always had a cowboy there to calve. Johnny McMurtrey was the main cowboy at to stay there, but if he went somewhere, I stayed there. His horses were...

    Bulls....

If a fella only had two cows, one of them ought to be a bull. (but, I bet he would hate the bull most of the year)

    Stupid,stupid, stupid heifers

I don't believe cows are stupid. I know cows are stubborn. If they are too stubborn to take their calf, I wouldn't want them on my feed bill either.

Oklahoma rancher dragged to death by calving cow

Just a careless moment. Bet he was tired, too. Things happen so fast.

Prospective opportunity to increase our cowherd

I had a day job, I borrowed money, bought cows, leased ground, and fed bought hay. Some years I wondered how I ever got in so deep, and couldn't see daylight. One of the best days, was spent in prayer, and the realization that if God wanted me to have it, the banker and government could not...

Pulling bulls from yearling heifers - August 5, 2014

Your grass looks good. I was finally able to move to "spring" grass the 1st of August. Rain started late July and has been abundant. Grass is better than it has been in years. I might start being Tallgrass, if 10" is tall! I pulled bulls from heifers last week, and, like you, I hope they...

Interesting articles on cattle handling facilities

Grandin works at a University with a fresh crop of kids each year and many observers hanging around jawin'. Under those circumstances, her way is best. On the ranch with a few good hands, Bud Williams would be done before Grandin had finished explaining the proper way to gather the bunch.

    Red Angus bull question

Easy calving on char heifers. Half blood heifers are pretty as yearlings. I'll know more about what kind of cows they made in a few years.

Beef: It's What You Can't Afford For Dinner

I have some salmon that cost about $15.00 / lb. We had to go catch it ourselves, but I am enjoying it the second time, but now back to beef. We will have a future in the beef industry; Abraham killed the fatted calf to offer honored guests. They ate goats to survive. We are still here. Our...

    calves on cows all winter

How did the cows do? Did they breed back? Fall calving does that, but requires lost of feed. Where?? Never an end to new ideas, some are good; some, not so much. I don't think that would work here. I'll bet most of thase calves got kicked off anyway.

Why did you choose your breed?

I like the feed efficiency of Charolais. No eye or sunburned bag problems. I have had lots of people who don't raise them tell me of the calving difficulties they have, but I pulled more Red Angus cross calves last year than straight Chars in the previous three years. I've also been told how...

    Hereford / Red Angus cross

I did a RA sire on Char momas this year. Steers averaged 641 over all. RA sired calves averaged 647. Char sired calves 630. Guess I'll look at some more RA bulls this year. Kept 80% crossbred heifers for replacements. Will likely run Char bulls on the crossbred cows. When the calves came...

    Playing with cows

I know that a horse named "Frog" sends red flags up to an old man that don't heal quick anymore. I'd be afraid that the name might describe the way he travels sometimes. They are nice mounts, and good pictures of ranch life.

    Cattle working, June 3 and 4, 2013

Wow! Your country looks nice. If my cattle were hauled up there, they would think they had starved plum to death and gone to Heaven! Kids & Grandkids looking good, too.
