MILK COW MEMORIES, by Steve Moreland, April 18, 2018

A foot in the bucket, a tail in the face, a cow bloated in alfalfa field. PItch hay in, shovel gutter out. Most excitement was probably Mom being attacked by a Canadian goose we raised, who'd become 'boss of the barnyard' She counterattacked with bucket of milk, most of which ended up on her...

Ya---and some years more than others. Hormones was my thought too.

    Calves grinding teeth

Teeth grinding can be a sign of pain--but I doubt it in this case. Seems like the worst thing to do with bottle calves is overfeed them or make the mix too rich. If they're still hungry, maybe let them fill up on warm water

    Shrink on calves

"now this heah mineral is absotively and positutely guaranteed not to rattle, clatter, rust or bust.. good for fits, farts, freckles, and sore bumholes makes childbirth a pleasure" if it's on the tag---it's in the bag

    Shrink on calves

I don't doubt your word---but I find it almost unbelievable! I sometimes load off a certified scale---always curious what the shrink is costing me. I would have expected you to say closer to 7. I think there's some other factor involved----like selling in Lewistown outa winnett/Jordan...

    Sweet clover questions

lush, green and growing--pre bloom--can be bloat, big time.

    Testing bulls

" I think the reduction in their flight zone can create some quite dangerous....." EXACTLY!! They are not my buddies or pets. I want to be the alpha dog--if I step in, they step back. I don't want them wild, scared or fearful. I do want a healthy respect and I want their flight zone to be...

    Cow ?

Neat to have a couple thermos's of hot water and some canned cow along. Feed the little dude, put him under the heater for a while. Neighbors used to get a kick outa my wife using a Cadillac to check cows. She didn't back down atall. "Field is smooth, easier for me to drag a calf in, leather...

    How High?

I was just keeping it simple and gate intact and stout. Seems like there's always one cow that would try to go under something like this deal-----this would be a standard , heavy duty gate the only 'modification' would be the hinges going to short sq tubing that could slide up and down...

    How High?

Building it 'in my head' I used standard heavy duty gate, hinges went to two square tubing pieces. Said tubing pieces slide over long, smaller sq tubing, 'offset' from stout, tall post. Numerous holes a couple inches apart, to pin 'gate hinge tubing' to smaller over a couple vertical feet...

    feeding

well , the water in Canadian snow is actually measured in imperial gallons or liters or kilograms---and the plain fact is that an imperial gallon is bigger than u.s. gallon, a liter is bigger than a quart and a kilogram is WAY bigger than a pound---so of course it's gonna work better to water...

George's looks a little over 40k, this one a little over 50k (pounds)

    feeding

"wintering out' can vary widely, with us. Go 12 miles south, if you don't overstock you could get in your car and head to mexico. Go 8 miles west, and they'd starve to death. Go to mussellshell river breaks and very last thing you want to do is cake 'em. Leave them alone and they'll scatter...

    Ivermectin Question

I'm thinking if you used it in the fall, not near as worrisome to do it again. Been meaning to ask the vet....

    Bovine TB. Any input?

Actually, paper says it probably did---and that original source may have been from Mexico.

    Bovine TB. Any input?

Gonna destroy or slaughter up to 20,000 mostly in s ab, a few effected ranches in sask. On ranch they originated--actually, should say 'it' I think--found one cow sent to u.s. for slaughter.\\----killed all livestock, horses, dogs cats. Looks like being extremely proactive. Lotsa cattle been...
