    Mice bait

Feral cats, and occasional bags of cat food to keep them healthy enough to really enjoy hunting! Haven't seen a mouse in many years, not since I started feeding the cats to keep them around. And the cats stay wild enough not to be under-foot when we go out doors! Best of both worlds, I guess. mrj

    Good times sometime

That looks good! Hope improvements made to the cattle and beef quality can keep the customers happy and returning for more beef in the new year (and many years!) ahead. It has to help that, at last, the health benefits of beef are being spoken about by some health professionals. mrj

    BQA

It's hard to 'evaluate' the system in his area when we don't know whether the seller of cattle has any alternatives to that particular system. Can he sell to another entity, or is there only one place or way to sell? Here, there are so many different ways to sell, from taking calves of varying...

HSUS, R-CALF, OCM: Guilt by Association?

It seems reasonable to help train Europeans and others the best methods to cook US produced beef in their restaurants and homes, since they seem to like it. And I like having more happy customers for the beef we produce. Good job, USMEF! mrj

    Coor's

Granted, this is an old post, but the point interesting to me is that for longer than my 78 years, ranchers in the USA have bought stocker/feeder calves born in Mexico and Canada to fatten a bit on USA pastures. It is reasonable to consider that some multi-generation ranchers currently...

HSUS, R-CALF, OCM: Guilt by Association?

Big Muddy Rancher, thanks for sharing this information. Along with the information presented, the demands for the "USA Beef" label rings false because there already are many, probably hundreds, of private brands of beef available across the country. All have been developed at a cost of real...

    Shearing

Enough of this 'over the hill talk' about someone 77 years old! I've got a couple months of it left, and CAN still keep up with a very lively three year old great-grand girl.........for an hour or two, anyway! But I won't be bragging about that tomorrow evening, I fear. Going to watch her...

    Second Spearhead branding - April 25, 2018

It's great to see the photo's of the Spearhead crew.....present and future! Cattle sure look good, too. Looking on behind Sybil a bit, it looks like you have pretty good 'old' grass, and good to see some green color on the foreground. And, like all us grandparents, I'm betting you all feel like...

    More Bovine Tuberculosis

I don't KNOW how it goes with cattle, but human testing can result in false positives, so, LOGIC tells me it can happen with other 'critters'. Of course, authorities must be diligent in tracking down even the most remote possibility of a real problem. Our local school used to use volunteer...

WTO rules in favor of US

It is encouraging that 'the good guys' can win some of these trade battles. Thanks to USMEF for their work in this one. mrj

    Canadian Meat

highgrit, you seem a bit mixed up between functions of NCBA Dues Division, and The Federation of State Beef Councils. It is the Federation which does the work for the Beef Check Off. And the Dues Division does the work the members vote to do. The Beef Check Off contract work has to be...

    Canadian Meat

That northern border has always been pretty easily crossed. There are many families who for generations have lived and farmed or ranched along the border, probably on both sides of it, for that matter. I believe there are packing plants near the border, probably on both sides, and at both ends...

    Canadian Meat

Same here! However, a few days ago we did learn that steaks from a 15 or 18 year old Longhorn Steer need to be marinated before pan grilling if you want them to be tender. The filet's were nicely tender, and sirloins were delicious but need to be sliced thinly when eating them. FH, I just had...

    Canadian Meat

While I may not approve of every thing NCBA has done, there is so much more the members choose to do which is very good for cattle producers. COOL was a fraud, imo., because promoters of COOL would not allow it to include ranch of origin which is what consumers stated over and over again is...

    Canadian Meat

Congratulations for advertising your state and GA cattle and beef! What specifically is it that NCBA is, or is not doing, that you believe is not in your, or the smaller US cattlemen's best interest? Personally, I most favor the work with consumers to find out what they really want. Then the...

    Canadian Meat

highgrit, Is your cattlemens' group you attended failing to inform you, or don't you believe some simple facts about the industry? I. NCBA as "the leader in beef Check Off money" as you claim, actually uses ALL the check off money they receive specifically to do the research and other work...

    Gestational Protein Research

Interesting reading that story. The research station is only about 40 miles from us, so may get to hear more about it. And will point our younger generation to look at the report. As usual, Kindra Gordon has an interesting story of value to many ranchers. mrj

    Canadian Meat

That shouldn't be much of a problem for the majority of consumers. There are something around 150 (probably more, as it has been a few years since I saw that figure) different brands of USA produced beef. Those ranchers, or groups of ranchers, have gone to the effort and expense of creating...

    Canadian Meat

My guess is that very few of us have much more than a slight clue as to how interwoven our cattle and beef production is between the USA, Canada, and even Mexico. It seems to be working quite well for all of us. Focus on improving inspections most likely is continuous. We do seem to forget that...

    Brits not wanting US poultry

Wasn't the problem with poultry processing the fact that the birds were allowed to be held in tubs (probably not the correct term, but the idea is right) of water, absorbing significant amounts of water which adds weight with the water being sold for chicken prices, AND some fecal material was...
