    Sparky's new mud boat, November 4, 2010

'pends on the duck...driver ducks(mostly fish eaters), I agree with ya. Puddle ducks(mallard, pintail, teal, woodduck) that's another story. My Grandma(a little Sicilian woman) had a recipe for duck legs to kill for...sauté a bunch of chopped onions, bellpepper, garlic...add wine and water to...

Still grazing PureCountry - lots of pics

PC and Grassfarmer alluded to a key factor in low input/extended grazing...you have to have the right genetics. Also, their nutritional needs(as set by calving date) has to fit your grazing system. Decide on the grazing system you are going to run for your environment, then select the cattle...

    A few pictures

Grassfarmer, thanks for providing proof that the bull "in my minds eye" is achievable...may need to give him a few more cows next year. That looks like my cows waiting on me to get things ready.

    Dry East Texas

I got zero rain in June, but was lucky to get just over an inch this past Monday. My pastures were looking a lot like yours. After Katrina, it hard to wish for a hurricane, but....

You Can't Do That Here! (Photos)

I anticipated losing my label 3 years ago and began selling by the whole and half carcass. Technically, the consumer is buying the live animal. I have to provide the processor with the name and address of the consumer before he is allowed to slaughter and the consumer is required to pay...

You Can't Do That Here! (Photos)

Andybob, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. The "reason" he gave was that he couldn't take the liability of having an inspector take a customers meat because of E.coli. He had a positive test come back on a grassfed animal...first in 40+ years. He took it personally. The inspectors...

You Can't Do That Here! (Photos)

Merry Christmas, Soapweed, I hope you and your middlemen have a profitable New Year!!! I don't begrudge middlemen and packers making a little profit, but I have a problem when a large packer gets involved in limiting the profitability of my small packer and eliminating my ability to access the...

You Can't Do That Here! (Photos)

That's an exaggeration...you got to knock off at least $300-$400 for processing. Ben, a couple of thought for you... I used to calve May/June and winter the calf on the cow(9-10 months). One drought year, Nature forced me to wean early and put the calves on winter annual pasture...both...

You Can't Do That Here! (Photos)

Ben, you're obviously listening to the wrong folks. Your three strand looks like polyrope...what are you using for temporary? What brand have you found to work best...last the longest? And your cattle are the wrong color too!  :D

Picking cotton here boss lots of pictures

My father designed the automatic module feeder at the gin. You need to get a pic of a finished module. Doing a good job of first picking...are there many un-open bolls? My second job on a farm was picking cotton...by hand...first was chopping cotton!!! Radar says y'all just got shut down.

Photos - What do they have in common?

HP, I agree with Pure Country. The way I understand it, Kit has done the same as I have...quit propping up the cow herd with extra inputs...instead, making them perform on what the land has to offer...let Nature sort them out. My neighbors think I'm out of the Beefmaster business because all...

Photos - What do they have in common?

In my experience, photos don't do cattle justice...I'm betting they are really impressive specimens in the flesh...feminine, deep bodied, good udders. I would guess commonality being same cow family.

OH what the Heat will do

OH what the Heat will do

You got that right, Kola!!!! It's cool when you have to do work to sweat...it's our kind of hot when you stand in the shade and sweat!!! The only good thing is that after your clothes are soaked, any breeze is like A/C!!!! :D :D

Spending time in udder contemplation, May 31, 2008

Once you decide to keep a heifer, you should never judge her by what she looks like...only judge her by what she produces! I've sold many of the best looking heifers/cows I've raised because they wouldn't produce and raise a good calf. Selling all calves out of first-calf heifers is another...
