Market Review - May 3, 2005
Each week it seems as though there are a lot of new issues to discuss in this business. For the last three weeks we have heard more cattle buyers and other markets say electronic tags and source verified cattle won't bring any more money than commercial cattle with out EID tags. Up until the last two weeks we have not sold enough cattle to get an idea ourselves on any price difference.
This week was the second week in a row where we sold enough source verified cattle to get a true market test. We are calling these cattle $7-10 higher per pound. While this is just a start on selling source verified EID cattle at this market, the hand writing is on the wall. If you don't have your calves EID identified, coupled with a good vaccination program you can see it will pay big dividends. As we increase our volume of these calves and yearlings we expect the price for the source verified cattle to go even higher.
When we 1st started this program we expected there would be a very significant difference in the prices. However, because we had never sold EID cattle before we could not over predict where this program would really go. Most competitors thought it was a needless experience that would only slow down the entire process, make more work for their employees and provide little return. The facts are it is a lot more work, more paper to handle, and it is very expensive to get started. However, 29 years of working on new marketing strategies, improving our physical plant, and putting quality people in place has put us in a position to meet the challenge of selling source verified cattle for premium prices.
We consider it our job to move the sale of cattle to a new level and keep this market on the leading edge of every opportunity available now an in the future to sell your cattle for premium prices.
There is also another important fact I think producers all over Ca. should know. It might cost $1 per hundred more to get a 600# steer to our market verses the way you normally sell your cattle but if he is source verified and brings only $5 cwt. up that is $30 for a $6 investment.
The top Source Verified Calves weighing 416# sold for Gary Guerra of Hollister for $155.00; he also sold the top selling heifers weighing 450# sold for $130.00. Buzz Nelson of Salinas sold 660# Source Verified steers for $119.00. Jim Poett of Lompoc sold 533# Source Verified steers for $141.00.
Every Tuesday, from May 3rd through August 30th we will hold a drawing for our consignors preceding the afternoon sale for a chance to win a Honda Rancher 350 4x4. The winning consignor will be included in the drawing conducted by the San Benito County Cattlemen's Association on Saturday, October 1, 2005. This week's winning consignor is Dio Choperena of Tomales.
