Market Review -

The market on light cattle continues to lead the way as buyers scramble to get some inventory before it rains. Rob Frost of Ventura sold two loads of fancy calves. His steers weighing 502# brought $138.00 and 574# steers brought $128.00. His heifer mates weighing 529# sold for $118.00. Ron Clements of Ben Lomand sold 446# steers for $136.00 and heifers weighing 417# sold for $121.00. Bob Leslie of Ventura sold 467# for $127.00. The yearlings continue to be in short supply but that market is steady also.

Last week we spent a full day with Power Genetics and Con Agra setting up our manual for CSA approval for 2006. It's just about the most exciting new addition to our marketing plan for next year. CSA approval means all cattle sold at our market will be eligible for over seas shipment. The demand for these cattle far exceeds the supply so you can see why everyone here is working so hard to get approved for next year. Again we will be the only sale in the entire western part of the U.S. where buyers can purchase these cattle on a weekly basis.

There are some very important things to remember if you plan on taking advantage of this exciting new market.

1. KEY information

a. Birth date of first and last calf born and a sheet of paper in your file to document those dates.

b. Premise number

c. Vaccination records (when, where, and what product was used.)

d. Electronic ID tags.

These key issues make your cattle qualify for CSA approval. If you do the following you can qualify for CSA and Certified Natural programs as well.

a. Electronic Id Tags.

b. Meet Vaccination program 1 requirements.

c. No implants.

d. Tag calves that are doctored with a different color tag so they can be separated at shipping time.

We had a neighbor here sell a 100, 400 weight calves in early october that brought 1.50 a lb. with no fall shots no tags weaned in the morning sold in the afternoon.These sold at our local salebarn the calves were a rainbow of colors.

I'd agree Denny. Being in the right place at the right time can be a blessing. Shots aren't making a big difference around here on the right bunch of cattle. In general they are deducting for no shots though.

weighing 400-500 lbs sold 10.00 higher, 500-550 lbs sold 5.00
higher and 550-650 lbs sold steady-3.00 lower with the 600-650 lbs
heifers showing the loss. Receipts 56 percent steers and 44 percent
heifers. 19 percent weighed over 600 lbs. Several consignments of
200-905 head. Numerous load lots and near load lots offered. Nearly
all calves had all the shots. Most calves displayed light-medium
flesh. Many buyers on the seats with good-very good demand. Next
week's auction expects 1000-1200 feeders plus weigh-up cattle. Sale
will start at 9:00 AM.

Been working sorts of calves most of the week--Been seeing $2-3 more on preconditioned calves- more on preconditioned calves with an all natural affidavit of no implants- no antibiotics and calving dates...Starting to see a few 30 day weaned calves go that ad another $2-3 for being weaned...And surprisingly the sale prices today are $2-5 more than those contracted in the spring and summer......

I don't think the border is really OPEN yet-- restrictions on the imports ( branding, ID requirements, spaying or heifer segregation requirements, etc) probably gives us $5-10....Plus there may be the big question mark because of the upcoming FDA ID requirements......

These prices sure are good. I sold some Angus steers weighing 701 at $127.50 and some others weighing 594 at $1.34 a while back. They went to southern NB farmer-feeders.

One question....what does "value enhanced" mean in sale barn sale listings? Probably everyone knows but me but I really don't know.

" Value enhanced" depending upon the sales barn usually means they have had their pre weaning shots (preconditioned) and can mean they come with affidavits for "all natural" ( no implants, no antibiotics).....Few years ago it meant they had no brands either- but now they seem to want the brands for ID.....

Usually if they are weaned, they list that....

One trend that has been noticeable this fall, is that the top end heavier calves are worth more per pound than some of the lighter ones. In other words, a calf close to 700 pounds is often worth more per hundredweight than a 500 pound calf. The 400 pounders still bring the most money per pound, but the dollars don't add up as fast because of less weight. Pounds pay, period.

Am hearing that one reason the heavier calves are selling so high is that the Feb futures price is over $94 and it backs off after Feb. Plus there is a lot of cheap corn available. The corn growers are looking for a way to get a little more for their crop.

I have always been amazed at how cattle will always sell for a higher price west ofthe Mississippi generally speaking. I suppose its partly due to being closer to the feeders / packers. Those are some good prices. Once a friend of mine was at a local sale barn here (TN) and three fellows pulling 24 ft trailers pulled in before the sale that he hadn't seen before. He got to talking to them and found out they were from Iowa and had come here to buy some 5 weight cattle, said they just couldn't afford the prices where they lived.

I was at Cattleman's Livestock Auction in Belen,NM today and the premium for weaned calves with a good health program was from $6 to $10 per cwt. I winter calves on alfalfa stubble and wheat. I think that the weaning and the health program is worth $30-$40 per head. You cannot be positive that the cattle have been given all the shots claimed, but if the sellers submit a list of what was given and the dates, you can be pretty sure that's what they got. When we process our own cattle , we keep a record of the date of initial and booster vaccines, specific meds(Cattlemaster, Titanium, pasturella,etc.) and include vaccine lot numbers and expiration dates. That satisfies the buyer.
