1998 Dodge 3/4 ton should I or shouldnt I

Roper,
I've never been afraid to put money into an old truck :) I have been driving a 1986 Chevy for about 10 years. SHe has always been good to me. However this last betrayal of her's has put her out to pasture :) I was having to change the starter every 2 months due to shot ring gear. Yes I know replace the ring gear, however that means taking the engine out. I may as well get the other truck (which is like new) and put and engine in it rather than fix the old beast, who is a rusted ole retiree. I bought the truck, Glenn was going to if I didnt so I'm picking it up tonight, The transmission fellow next door came over and did a bunch of tests and its in great shape :)

Good luck with it Judith. Let us know how it turns out.

I think it should be OK, no matter what happens you don't really lose in this type of situation. Even as a "parts" truck I can get the money back. It really is unfortunate that I am to cheap to by a new truck.. I hate loans...GRRRR Same truck off the lot starts at 40,000

Tell me more about your 86 chevy. Is it 3/4 ton? One ton? 4 wheel drive?

New twist ole story. Bought the truck, Glenn offered me 4000.00 for it as it sits. ( He knew what I was paying, but has turned around and is selling it to a customer of his that wanted it.....) So I sold it to him and went out an bought a 1998 GMC. Nice little truck and it has a 6 month warantee on it. We are all pretty happy campers this fine afternoon :) As the world churns......

Roper the Chevy is the Heavy Half. Not a 4 Wheel Drive and the old girl has some rust. A few dents, as it was driven by Rolands dad when he was undergoing cancer treatment. (welcome to the world of the west coast where everything even the humans will rust!) Not sure what I am going to do with her.... It's the expo 86 edition. Two owners and it has propane on it (currently not working)

Can't beat that.

Judith's Trading Post.........Everything from Horses to used trucks   ......now see if you can trade them freak chickens for a decent chunk of beef so you have something proper for a ranchers.net addict to eat :!:

I'm terrible with wheeling and dealing :) I just have tooo...... I'm rediculasly cheap ( but not easy) and bargain hunt until my feet bleed :) I am also an auction junky. Just bought a GORGEOUS TB mare (no , i did not need another one) she is due in April (That is horribly late for a TB)so she went for a song! I paid 1200 on her and the stallion she is bred to stands at 3,000 US. Mayakovsky is an absolutely gorgeous stallion and I am totally tickled with that purchase too. Been a good week! But of course we all know that this means that next week, my water heater will blow, I'll have a 12 million dollar vet bill etc, etc. Just seems to be the way things work :)

Just to give you a visual image, after another 3000.00 worth of paint and tires I'll only have about 14,000 or 15,000 in her. I'm quite sure then it'd be worth about 5,000  Everything will be new but .... man that hurts to look at.

If you put 15,000 into that then you are a daft. You could have went out and bought a used semi and a nice aluminum trailer for about $18,000 and then you might have something. To each his own I guess.

Work Hard, I've read a few posts of yours and they come across as rather abrasive. Now I could be totally wrong but I am quite sure that Red Robin meant over a period of who knows how many years..... I can assure you that the man is far from "Daft" as you so politely chose your words. The men and women of this board deserve a lot more respect than you have chosen to give them. Try to play a bit nicer. This is a fun place to play.

I believe this is a place to voice opinions, you do not know me nor I you. I errored on the point of calling his decision to put $15,000 into a $4000 truck as daft. To me it is, to him it musn't be. If I come off as abrasive then so be it, we don't get anywhere in life poo pooing and high fiving decisions we think might be wrong. Without opinions this site would cease to exist. If RR's lifes abition is to take on these projects then I can point him or her to many more sitting in tree rows for much less money and much closer to Arkansas than Ohio. good night Judith :D

OK, yes you are correct this is a public forum and that is correct I don't know you.

Just remember you catch more flies with honey than with with vinegar.

Although i'm not sure why anyone would want to catch flies....

We're grazin in the same pasture Judith, BTW I think that 4wd problem in the Dodge was simply a malfunctioning engaging pin in the differential, a relatively easy fix, (I've put 3 in a 97) but that was the least of it's problems. You probably made a hell of a deal. Toodles.

Actually the problem with the 4 wheel drive was an operator error... I was doing it wrong... Truck was supposed to be a movin and I had it stopped. It was totally fine

The reason she wouldn't want to put the Cummins diesel engine in that pickup truck is because that truck's not built for that engine. The driveline componants and frame are lighter duty for the gasoline engines than they are for the diesels.
Cummins designed the entire frame and drivetrain around their engines for Dodge because at first, Dodge did just drop Cummins engines in a regular 3/4 ton truck. They blew out differentials, driveshafts, everything during testing.

It should engage parked.

Its pretty common for chain drive transfer cases <208>to grind a little bit when going from 4L to 4 H and you definately should be stopped to do it.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In 1998, the proper way to engage 4 wheel drive is as Judith described it, while rolling slightly. Doing otherwise is hard on the transfer case and the central axle disconnect.

Roper, as far as your comments about a Cummins, it wouldn't be an easy swap. PCMs would need to be switched out, even if she went with a mechanical diesel, and the front and rear diffs wouldn't be the Dana 70 and 70/80 hybrid rear, but probably a Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear. The transfer case would likely have been the NV241LD, versus the NV241HD, which is needed for the diesel. It would also be hit or miss whether the front suspension components were up to the task. If the truck had the snowplow prep package, it would have the springs/shocks from a Cummins, otherwise other coils/shocks would need to be installed. Doing a swap isn't always easy on those trucks :(

And Judith, are you nuts? Trading a Dodge and buying a CHEV? :P
