Boy, it's not very nice outside. 5 degrees F with a brisk SE breeze. That SE wind always feels so much colder. Luckily, I didn't find a new baby dumped in a snow bank.
 
Anybody up for a trade?? MINUS 32 C with a wind chill of -42 this morning & it's a touch milder than yesterday!! Could be worse........we could be calving in this crap.

Get a lot of snow up in your area? Out here close to the hills we only had 3-4" for the wind to blow around.

We didn't get as much as just north of here. Probably 4 to 5" but its hard to tell exactly as it blew around pretty good as it came.
 
We got about 6"s of snow yesterday and it's -8 degree's with a wind chill in the -20's.I'm normally getting calves now but after last year I backed them up a few weeks.We have a few from a wayward bull. :mad:
 
-40 yesterday morning, -25 this morning. I do believe we are in a warming trend :D . Weather folks claim it will be above freezing by tuesday.

NR, l feel for you. We've had the coldest winter anyone around here can remember, so I know what you're going through. Some of our yearlings froze their ears this winter. Can't say as I've seen that before. I also have a yrlg. with a frozen hock. I suppose I'll have to park her in front of a bale this summer and eat her this fall :?
 
There's a heat wave heading into Saskatchewan to warm you boys up. We were -29C last two mornings but it's really warming up today.
I have a few yearlings that show a raw edge to the bottom of one ear, looks like maybe a little piece has fallen off - will that be frostbite? None of the calves have two ears like that only one, I guess the other side must have been down-wind. It's certainly been the toughest winter on cows in my 9 years here.
 
I'd agree with you Western Canadians about the winter. We've had 2 cows and some calves - 6 to 8 month old calves - freeze ears this winter. December was the worst of it by far. When you get weeks of -30 or colder, you know you're gonna see some of that stuff. This last couple days was certainly not needed, but the snow is a welcome sight. It's warmed up a fair bit today, -22C right now, but no wind, and the sun is shining nicely.

Coincidentally, it happened just as he pulled into town :wink: :twisted:

I have a couple of last years calves that look to have frozen ears as well and we haven't been near as cold as you folks up north. In the salebarn last week there were even some bred heifers out of Montana that showed a couple ears that were raw on the edges.
