when it gets as cold as it does my cows don't go out and expose themselves to get to water - they just prefer to lick snow.... got to look them over pretty good. they hadn't been to water since last thursday. one cow with a frozen eye, one cow with two frozen ears, and one cow that froze her briskett.

lead cow always first to water - 98 model cow. quit leaving the racks on them in 99

some bare ground - with the wind blowing so hard hopefully it will just steadily open up from now on out

my winter project - looks the same as it did when winter started!

hope everyone is wintering well and good luck on your calving seasons! hopefully things don't change to fast so i can get these coming calves contracted for $1000/hd - a guy could get ahead with the banker if this hung around for a few.

Is the wind howling up there too?

No calves here out of our Herefords yet. Not til the 9th. they have been getting some straw to lay on and snack on after the regular hay.

Our winter isn't bad at all down here. The crazy thing I was looking at what the high and low was today across Texas and it was 91 in Laredo and 17 in Dalhart. I am glad we are in the middle. :wink:

Two loads of black calves from way up here went down to a feedyard in Dalhart about ten or so years ago. I remember scaling them off in a pretty good old Sask. snowstorm.

Temp has gone from -35 last night to +25 now at 8PM... A 60 degree change in temps... But with the warm air-- we are also again getting snow- 20-30mph winds howling- and drifting...
If it ain't the icebox- its snowing....

Yep-- we can only wish--BUT the weather folks are saying this arctic front will dance back and forth over us for at least the next week-- with possible 10-20 Below temps again Monday night after highs of 30's on Monday.... And chances of snow all week....

Glasgow set a new alltime low for today at -30... Wolf Point was the coldest reporting town in the nation at -37... And I heard several rural folks that had -40 again last night.....

i guess i quit keeping track of how cold it gets... and its pretty much a given the wind will blow. yesterday the door blew off he pump house and frooze up all the water here. every individual line froze up at the valve - those were an easy fix but no water to waterers all night froze them all up too - i hate working in those cramped little spots under a waterer with pipe wrenchs and thread tape, etc. froze my fingers.

man i'm glad i'm not calving on top of it all - the last time i had a freeze up in the pump house i was january calving and the same thing happened and it never got above 20 below for three days straight and i ended up hauling water cause i couldn't get stuff unfroze - the water well is about 3 miles from house and i'd get a load of water home and the valve on the tank would be frozen solid - so learned real quick to just keep the valve cracked a little.

man i hope we get rid of some of this snow before april - might have to actually use the calving barn if it doesn't.
