2010 Rodeo Horses of the Year
They'll be competing at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, beginning December 2 in Las Vegas.

Rocky Patterson and Skips Harlan Tyree

America's Horse – There will be an all-new class of superstar horses on display December 2-11 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, including one nicknamed "Vegas."

His registered name is RA Sonoita Silver, but owner Turtle Powell calls him Vegas. This seems fitting enough, given that Powell splurged four years ago, paying Terry Thompson $25,000 to get a team roping heading horse that he believed could give him a chance at a gold buckle.

Vegas is the 2010 AQHA-PRCA Heading Horse of the Year – his first such award – and Powell arrives at the Wrangler NFR in third place in the world standings.

"Without him, I would be struggling," Powell told ProRodeo Sports News. "I would be in the bottom half, 20 to 25. When I didn't have him, it was very hard for me to make money. Probably 75 percent of it is him. You have to have a really good horse. He's awesome. I wouldn't be where I am without him."

Travis Tryan's Precious Speck, aka "Walt," who won the heading horse award four times (2003, 2007-09), was voted into second place posthumously, ahead of brother Clay Tryan's Bears Cash Partner, aka "Syndicate." Walt died April 24 of an aneurysm at the Clovis (California) Rodeo.

For the first time since 2003, all of the AQHA-PRCA-WPRA horses of the year are first-time winners, a rather notable changing of the guard.

Jade Corkill's Fine Snip Of Doc, aka "Cave Man," was named the heeling horse of the year, ending a four-year reign by Baileys Copper Doc, aka "Diesel" (2006-09), who is owned by fellow Nevadan Randon Adams. Diesel finished third in this year's balloting behind Travis Graves' Startime Diablo, aka "Super Star."

Dashs Dapper Star, aka "Wick," owned by Wade Sumpter and Ken Lewis, was voted the steer wrestling horse of the year, ahead of Bailey Tokum, aka "Pump Jack," and Rocks Eye Opener, aka "Jessie," the legendary Canadian horse owned by Lee Graves who won the award in 2007 and 2009.

Eightys Sport, aka "Sweetness," was second in the tie-down roping horse of the year balloting last year, but moved up to the top spot in 2010 by earning more than $90,000 for the cowboys who rode him, a list that includes three Wrangler NFR qualifiers: Clint Cooper, Trent Creager and Fred Whitfield. The 16-year-old gelding is owned by Karen Herbst and Spur Resources 1 in Whitesboro, Texas.

Rocky Patterson and steer roping horse of the year Skips Harlan Tyree, aka "Pops," repeated as world champions in November at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping. Pops out-polled White Hot Ike, aka "Bullseye," owned by Chance Kelton, and Tonk Champ, aka "Champ," who is owned by Chris Glover.

Judge Buy Cash, aka "Jethro," owned by Frank and Lynne Mays, and ridden by Brenda Mays, is the barrel racing horse of the year.

If Willy's healthy I bet they win the world title off him.

i wouldn't mind seeing someone win it off Willy. it would be a perfect ending to an impressive career.

that black horse of Lee Graves is the runninest SOB i've ever seen.

DANG, I thought this thread was gonna be about broncs. We all know that them that go down the rode pulling trailers wouldn't be there if not for the horses. Since we aint talkin about broncs, I guess I'll vote for "Martha".

Bar Bar 2 you need to come up north if you want to see broncs lol. Half the U'S horses were born and raised up here. Three great colts to watch out for are Simon's Warrior and Shoshone Mountain of Calgary and a no name SOB of Franklin's that drilled Ty at Lea Park. You need to come up and go to Ponoka that's my favorite rodeo. I wonder if we'll ever see a whole perf of Grated Coconut relartives at the NFR-there's enough good ones.

Love that Martha.....but I really am thinkin Sherry Cervi and Stingray are gonna do some damage. And always gotta root for Brittany Pozzi....and Duke. :)

They pretty much all buck-even his old mamma is still good to cash a cheque on. If you come up and do the Airdrie-Ponoka-Calgary deal you'll see alot of good horses. Talk some young guy into entering and go as his companion you get passed into everywhere at Calgary. There's an old 'Phantom' behind the chutes tells a good story!!

If I gotta look at a barrelracer, its gonna be Lindsay and Martha. Although those cranberries have helped fund a sho'nuff good breeding program.

I'm gonna venture to guess that that "Ol' Phantom" won't let the truth get in the way of a good yarn. :D

NR, they say that denial is one of the first stages of knowing that there may be a problem. I'll call up my Pentecostal mom and she'll get her prayer circle started. Don't make me go there. It aint pretty. Trust me on that one. I used to antagonize those old gals till they got me hemmed up in a corner one day. I learned my lesson.

Justin, I'm sorry and take full responsibility for the hijacking of this thread. But then again its just like a real rodeo. Whenever the roping, dogging and barrels are going on, I'm usually lookin around for someone to talk to. I'm still voting for Martha though.
