Sounds like a very good sale. Today we sold the only ten head of red calves raised on our ranch this year. The four red heifers averaged 556 pounds at $149.00 per cwt, and brought $828.44 per head. The six red steers averaged 542 pounds at $158.00 per cwt, and dollared out $855.83 per head.

This year many heifer calves are being advertised as "none held back off the top." I told Greg Arendt, manager of Valentine Livestock Auction, that the black heifers we brought to town today could be advertised as "none held back off the bottom." We kept back the 69% "top-enders" (supposedly, in our eyes  ), and are putting them out with two other ranches for the winter at a cost of $2.10 per head per day. Will they be worth $500 per head more by the middle of May than they are right now? Doubtful, but I am a gambler at heart.  Anyway, our light end black heifer calves (31%) today averaged 482 pounds at $152.40 for a grand total of $734.50 per head.

The red cattle at your sale sure sold a lot better. Congratulations on your promotional efforts. They are paying off bigtime. :-)

I watched parts of a SD auction the other day on Live Cattle Auctions-- and heard a couple of lots sold to Gill Red Angus----BUT-- they were black calves ... :P

We aren't color blind, as long as they are a customer :)

Thanks Soap! I would be willing to bet your red calves would have sold better if you had more than just a few head.

A long time order buyer who pretty much only buys black hides came up to Dad after the sale and told him he was really impressed with the quality of Red calves at this sale. Sure makes a guy feel good!

All right! At least we aren't the only ones gambling on heifers. Our decision is partly based on the fact we got rid of many older cows this fall. Our preg rates were really good, so we decided to dig deeper into the cows, and figure out what to do with the heifer calves later. Feed wise, this seems to make the most sense... I'll let you know how brilliant this decision was 6 months from now :P .
