4/12/08 Part 2

Yanuck-
Sorry, saw the yellow & immediately thought of the Hombre horse. But that Baron horse is a dandy too. Course there's dang few that don't get the job done coming from there.
And you're right about Brinkmans, between the show records & sales, they have got their program pretty well established. First time I'd met them, but seemed like real nice folks.

I don't want to get in the middle of the tie-down debate but for my money, i'll take a good ranch horse who gets ridden over any high dollar, blooded trained to the hilt pony. Most horses need lots of wet saddle blankets to turn into a great cowhorse and nowadays not too many get used enough. Grand-dad rode roman-nosed, split-eared, short blocky mustangs and always had a horse under him at days end. Wouldn't win any beauty contests but wasn't trying. I'll take smart, hard, cowy ponies regardless of how they carry thier head and who taught them where correct headset is! But i'm just a dumb hand with out any status or certificates cept for riding horses after cattle since birth! ya'll do what makes ya happy! :D

lol....you boys sure like your ranch ponies. It's funny how someone can critisize my methods, but the moment I say something about his pasture bred horses all you guys freak out.....good on you I guess for sticking together. Lord knows there are alot of likeminds with the same kinda horses on here. As far as I see, Hooks started all this bullshit by making is dumbass little comment on my thread. Just because you don't understand something doesn't give you the right to critisize....right? I'm sure Hooks started alot of horses and did it well enough to do it for a living for 10+ years........

If you noticed i said "Do it how ever it works for you". :cowboy:

Hooks didn't start anything.

If anything it was me cause I said I thought the bungee was a great idea, he just countered that.

Take a breath...there's lot more exciting things to fight about on this site than " to bungee or not", I promise you that!!

Hey Chocolate, I'd like it a whole better if yall had said smartass instead of dumbass........that's more my style
I really have a thing against quick fixs & shortcuts. Thats all I was tryin to say.
As far as the ruckus over "pasture bred cow ponies", you stepped in that pile all by your lonesome. Like Yancuk showed, ranch horses can have alota background, with or without the trophies. Babcock, 6666, Pitzer, Hitch, Sandhill & so on, had been breeding working ranch horses for quite some time. Some go to ranch work, some go to the show pen, but they're still ranch horses. Folks like Leanin-H, BMR, Yanuck have a need for honest pony that's there everyday. Some care about the background, some don't. Its whatever works for them.
Gettin windy here, but really wasn't lookin to get into a pissin-match, just a discussion. After 30+ years, I thought I might have alittle to offer......... (I'll take a breathe here & go back out to the barn......)

ps-Thanks guys............... :-)

I don't have the time,

..I think somebody said "sometimes slower is faster"......they were talking about workin cattle, but it works for horses as well......

I don't train work horses on a schedule per say. Everything I got is for sale, and is priced and sold according to skill level at any given time. My time is always the same value.

The tie-down helps my horse with his balance
So Much BS (just my Thoughts)

....this is something I've always questioned. How come they don't use tie-downs in reined cow horse or ranch horse events? Or moreover, everyday ranch work................

A Horse that need a "Tiedown" is a "unbroke, Unfinished" Horse

Seen many broke noses and horses that went over backwarde from broken Tiedown

If horses have a 'high head' problem, it's a people problem caused by poor hands.

Fix your hands and you won't need gimmicks. And the basics will always be there. I know lots of hands that do everything with their horses (in an arena and out) that never put a tie-down on their horses. I've always kinda thought a tie-down in an arena might save the day, but never outside. I sure hate to see a horse with their head on upside down. Watch the rider, he usually has 'QUICK HANDS' and does things way too fast.

I'm with HOOKS, BMR, Leanin H and Mrs. Greg on this one.

Not saying you can't "Git 'er Done" Chocolab, but horses need to be 'taught' how to do something, not MADE to do it. Gotta go to kindergarten before 6th grade...Sure it might take some longer in the beginning but the end result is worth it.

P.S. Hooks--daughters grey horse brought $4500 at the Ranch Horse Sale. (very nice headset, I might add...)

and the other colt they sold brought the same. They had to scratch the roan horse as he came back from being rode...way too thin. Those darn guys who use them and don't feed them make me SICK. I'd never take another one to that guy if I were them. Why they want to ride a horse that doesn't feel good is beyond me. Guess they are scared of them so they are afraid to feed 'em. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

daughters grey horse brought $4500 at the Ranch Horse Sale

that sounds pretty good.......if I remember right that wasn't a real big sale (numbers wise), so its sounds like they faired pretty well.........course, like me, they probably wanted more

and with the other colt bringing that much also, it ought to tell them that program is goin in the right direction................ :-)

Oh, they were very happy with what the horses brought. They were the top selling horses in the 'green' catagory. She said this was the second year for that particular sale and it went well. The offering throughout the sale was truly 'Ranch Horses' and represented honestly. It is Invitational so not everyone can consign a horse, which keeps the honest folks in the sale.

Choclab,if you dont want your methods critisized.dont post em,cause I guarantee, they will be, its called differing opinions.
Every horse is differnt, your bungee cord practise may very well be the correct way to train horse "A"s headset to your liking, and on horse "B" would'nt be worth a damn.................good luck

PS like your pictures, keep em coming.
