Neighbor has a a Bruin.. Not a bad little 4-wheeler, really almost the same as the Kodiak 400 that I have except the lack of speedometer and a slightly smaller engine... If the company is paying the 2000 a year for it I would probably just bump up to the 400, not even much of a diference in price if I remember.
 
Also know the Bruin was a 2006 model and they replaced the Bruin 350 with the Kodiak 350... Don't get the Bear 400 has that is always in 4X4 and that is a pain in the arse.
 
I couldn't find it anywhere, but I swear the 06 models they had were Bruin 400's? They seemed good enough to me. HAs the push button 4wd, which is what she would like.
 
We run a grizzly 660, two bruin 250 i think and a yamaha dirt bike. I use the grizzly and during the winter it doesnt see much use, but in the summer its not unusual for me to put 60 miles a day on it. I would recommend that what ever brand you buy get the automatic transmission. I can stop back up and be after a cow faster than anyone else can with the other bikes. They all have manual transmissions and my bike is the only 4 wheel drive. Our choices here are limited to honda, yamaha, and kawaski. The honda dealer here is hard to deal with and the service tech is really slow and sometimes his repairs are not the greatest. The other dealer carries both the yamaha and kawaskis, their service is ok but has its problems as well. We like the yamaha because they are reliable and easy to handle. We noticed that the kawaskis were a lot harder to turn and took more space to turn. We use the bikes for just about anything, from checking, working cows, to building fence. It is lots of fun to be riding across a pasture checking cows and realizing that the antelope in the pasture are racing along beside you just to see how fast you can go.
 
IL, I think you are right on the price. Here's the one thing that annoyed me. One of them is camo and costs $500 more becasue Yamaha has to pay real tree for the use of the camo!!!

If we get either of these, it will be the red one!!

Besdies with the camo she might lose it in the orchards if she isn't careful!
 
I'd make sure that it has a fully locking 4WD. I can't say about the Bruin, but when I was in the Yamaha shop looking at ATVs, I noticed some had an extra button for full lockup and some didn't. If it doesn't have full lockup, I'd ask how much to add it. Its really worth it when the going gets rough. Nothing worse than having a front wheel pop off the ground and losing 4WD.

The old Kodiak didn't have that button and it is more like a 3 wheel drive vehicle if one tire gets up in the air. The only good news about that is it is so light it is easy to get off the hummuck... I don't know about the newer ones (For one, the newer ones have IRS whle mine was a soli rear axle).. Lucky for me the Polaris doesn't get stuck to easy... Because if it did, that sucker has some weight to it.
 
The old Xplorer that I used had an open diff up front. When one of the front wheels went up, you had nothing but the back tires as all the power would go to the wheel in the air. It was especially bad in mud or deep snow, as the tire with no traction would get all the power and you were stuck. From my trials with that piece of junk I decided that there would never be another ATV around here without a locking front diff.
