And of course the 1 heifer that is close to calving decided it was time. No problems, other than the cold. She had it on her own, it got up without help and found dinner. She followed the milk cow into the barn this morning, and we decided to leave her in. Kinda thought she might be calving, but we weren't too sure. But when DH went out at 2:00 pm the heifer was just getting to her feet. 2 hours later, this is what(you hope) a baby looks like when it is -23 plus a severe windchill outside.....

And, since her ears were getting a bit crispy, she got some fancy new headgear....

And, yes, it is snowing inside the barn. Ours isn't that airtight, and with the wind it snows inside too....

 Randi!!!! They already think us Canucks are crazy...then you show them that we put toques on our calves

Enjoyed your pics and our barns about as airtight as yours

Is it a bull calf cause it's ' bunny ears' are blue? I'm guessing you got a pink set for the girls???

That's the wildest thing I've ever seen!!!!

OhhhOOhhhh, poor little thing! We sure do miss spring calving..NOT.

It's -15 degrees F, wind has settled down some, and the sky is clearing    BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Poor cows didn't want to come out of the trees this AM, it was -10 but wind blowing 35 MPH. Should have taken pics during chores but I was afraid it was tooooooo cooooold for the poor camera :?

Nope, it is a girl. That is the only set we have. First time we have used them too. We will see if mama thinks they are as cute as we do, or if she licks them off......

I hope I never need one of those head gear things.
Dang that is just too cold fot this Alabama red neck. .

I'm too cheap to buy toques-- Just a roll of ducktape works as good or better.....

They will serve some people well, I'm sure. Froze off ears are ugly.

Wind blew 101 mph at Spearfish, SD. Glad I wasn't there! Was 56% here before the wind hit. Dropped pretty fast, but still about +8% F.

We always called them moo-muffs. Sure saved alot of ears with those things. Most cows left them on but there was always the odd one who'd lick them off. The trick is to dry the calf's ears as best you can with a towel before you put them on, otherwise they get awful wet inside from the calf's ears, and they just stay wet and still freeze.

Randilana, do you use that barn every year? And at this time of year? If so, why don't you try to fill the airholes up a bit? Not trying to sound bitchy, just wondering.

Well, this cow decided she doesn't think ear muffs are cute. So, now the calf is hockey socked  . We have used them before, and they work.

This is the second year for the barn. We had most of the holes patched up, but the winds this year have taken care of some shingles. We are still working the kinks out. And, we don't really start calving til March, this is a heifer we bought this fall. March is hardly ever this bad. I know if we calved in Jan/Feb we would need a much, MUCH better barn. And a bigger one.

I have never used those ear muffs, I just try to get the calf inside and dried off. Losing some of the ear is not as bad as damaging the feet, which can happen if it is cold enough to freeze an ear.
