4H Update

Well we got our local and division 4H show over this week-they are back to back-as usual it had its ups and downs -the 50 yearlings getting out at home was a 'down' lol but we recaptured them.The kids did really good-no first with their critters but Megan won Senior judging for second year in a row and Emily won Clover Bud judging at Divisions. Sara had a tough time selling 'Tuck' she got to leaking pretty good in the sale ring-he was kind pof her big Bovine buddy. All in all a pretty good year. The champion at Division was a Shorthorn X steer-pretty darn good calf. Our judge at the big show this year was Dennis Ericson-he's a prominant Angus Breeder and ringman up here in Canada-he was a bit longwinded but he did a great job-really explained things to the kids spent time with every kid in each class. The school kids tour through during the show and Dennis visited with them about how great beef was also. I'd reccommend him to any club looking for a great judge.
 
Denis long winded???? Tell me it isn't so. :lol: :lol:

I've known Denis for many years. He is a very nice man and a great promoter of beef and Angus cattle in particular. He works about 200 sales a year, I don't know how he has the time to judge as well. His good wife holds down the home front doing most of the chores while he is out on the road. I think they run about 200 cows.
 
NR, let Sara know it's all right to cry. Just shows she has love for her critters, nothing wrong with that. If that don't make her feel better, tell her I'm a grown middle-aged woman AND I still cry when a pet has to be sold!
 
Good for the kids NR,4-h is by far the greatest character builder there is. We've had Dennis judge often,he can be long winded but always seemed to be fare and did explain things to the kids.I always felt bad for the younger ones when they had to sell,the older ones are hardened,lol.Judging was our daughters fortay,always did great at it!!Good for the owner of the shorthorn-cross{Hopefully Doc Harris notes that :lol:}Greg went to our countys 4-H day Monday but haven't had enough time with him to ask how it went.
 
Were not good enough fitters to win the critter side of it much-our skinny little heifers have won district three times I guess but the kids pick away at the other stuff-I'll have to add up our grand total of 4H calves we've had over the years-it's been quite a few-Sara even showed our 4 year old bucking bull as a baby calf in Cloverbuds-he'd sure nuff clear the ring if she tried it now.

tell the kids congrats for all their hard work.....win or not they have really accomplished a lot and something to be very proud of
 
Heck when Lacey started she picked the "cutest" calf in our herd,as she got older and started understanding what the judges were looking for she got better at it,won reserve but never Grand Champ with our shorthorn crosses.
 
I was glad that Al inherited Hubby's attitude about selling his animals, instead of mine. I don't think he ever shed a tear over one in all the years he's been doing this.

Sorry that Sara had a tough time, though.........

Here's Ty discussing his nemesis with the disytrict judge-Dennis Erickson-Dennis did a great job. Glad Ty got his steer from H E Double Hockey Sticks domesticated. Hard to belive that steer doesn't even go back to EXT lol.
 
Dennis did our regional a few years back. He made fun of us two kids, whom have spent a lot of time with him, as we were not really kids but he did a great job. Guaranteed he still knows most of those kids faces. He really put the show behind but it was totally worth it. Every kid had to answer questions about their steer and really made it worth their time to bring the calves to the show.

It didn't even fizz on him-he was just an ill bred stubborn son of a gun-old 'Flash' my big sorrl mare taught him some manners the night before the show. I was helping Ty lead him with that chain halter and he took off and hit the end of the shank so hard he broke the snap.

Here's that old mare showing him the ropes -when he'd try and run by her she'd turn him off and kick him-it gradually got through his thick simmental head -how to behave.
