4th of july/tranquilizers

Ever considered it could be curiousity? granted, I wouldn't want to stick around and find out if it wasn't, but at the same time I know calves are some of the most curious critters out there. I've had plenty come flying over to check me out and then skid to a halt, blowing snot, and race off because I was a bit too scary.

 The ant farm was already here we're trying to get rid of it.

These 2 came available when we were ready for calves and like I said they were a good deal so we jumped on it. We had them sold before we bought them so just feeding them up to butcher.
They may be just curious I (obviously) don't have any experience so I'll take it like that but won't go into the pasture without a whip.

The dogs leave them alone unless either I call them into the pasture or they are guarding the property from intruders and the cows charge them.
We back up to 350 acres of forest that allows brush pickers and sometimes they get too close to the property for the dogs liking.

Get them in the Barn/Pen
tranquilizer IN FEED
"Show Calm" _ No whips or dogs
Don't just feed them and run-off
Put feed next to the fence and sit "quietly" next to the fence on the other side _ Make them come to you _ let them smell/lick you _ pet them (But not through the fence)(Broken Arms)

Soon you will be able to walk with them and rub their backs

Take your "quite" time

"Show Calm" at Feed Stores

I bought a "bargain herd" of registered Charolis about 4 years ago and the reason I got them cheap was they thought they needed to kill any human in reach. Many of you might remember my post about them. They had been left in a remote pasture and several young kids on dirt bikes had been giving them grief and they decided any human in reach needed pounding in the dirt!

At first they would bellow and charge if they saw a person so I would sneak in and pour sweet feed on the ground about 10' inside the fence and then make a noise so they would see me and get over the fence. After a couple of days they would come looking for the feed instead of something to kill and after a few weeks I could stay in the pasture with them. I did end up getting rid of two that could not be trusted but the rest will eat from my hand any time now.

I have a neighbor who goes to the sale barn every spring and gets several ( 8 yo 10 ) hiefer claves about 300-400 # to eat his ground down and then sells them in the fall. These calves always had temperment problems and I sudgested he purchase one old cow to keep with them as they needed a roll model.

You could not believe the difference - - - - and he can still make a few dollars off the cow as well. Young animals left to their own wits can be quite a handfull!

:?: Ya know that sounds like these cows, they were also in a remote pasture not that far off the highway so you could see them.
When we went to look at them the whole herd bolted (clueless here) next time I know better.

They are much better then they used to be, still wouldn't trust them much.
I did space out yesterday and took a bucket of sweet feed to them without a whip or dog and they didn't try and run me down.
We are going to try and check out the auction by us and see what they're doing.
1 of our neighbors buys his Angus from someone for about 350.00 at weaning.
Around here that's the going price unless you go with the Holstein bull calves then you can get them anywhere from 85-200 but their not weaned.

Listen.

Next time you go into the ' cattle biz'....a BAD....REALLY BAD sign is when you only see the herd thru binoculars!!!

If all you can see is the South-end of a North-bound critter....you need to leave out also.

Make sure you get cattle that you can handle to your specifications and set up. Now, they may not be ' bargain' but like in all things...you usually get what you pay for!!

Me, I won't chase mine...they come to a bucket and a yell or they are G-O-N-E from here.

Others who run big numbers on ranches in Nebraska and other states....also have cattle that you can handle and are not wild....but they handle them in a different way. Each to his own.

Keep the whip and the dogs out of the pastures ....and critters can smell fear, again it's that instinct kicking in.

Be confident in your movements and deliberate....not fast and skittish.

Next time....try goldfish first!
