A Bit Of Winter--Pics and Poem

January Day

The rooster's crow echo's thru the cold
A new day has begun
Soon the darkness shall retreat
Pushed away by the morning sun

The livestock arise and seek the sun
Soaking up it's weak solar rays
Huddled together against a bank
During these cold winter days

Pickups are cold and tractors don't start
Everything is a big block of ice
A warmer place like..... Florida
Right now, sure would be nice

You brush off the snow and continue on
Cause there's ice that needs to be opened
A feed route to run and some haying done
And there's always a fence that is broken

It's way below zero but that's the norm
When you live in the great northern plains
Spring is a coming in a few short months
With luck there'll be some warm rains

But meanwhile we shiver and chop ice and feed
Keeping the livestock well fed
But it's a no brainer, I'd rather be here
Then stuck in an office.....instead.

Natures alarm clock.

A view similar to what Custer might have seen, only these are just hungry and friendly.

Living the real life sure is evident in your poems...I enjoy them and the pictures...hate to say it outloud, but I kind of like the "Custer" picture..

Just for you Empty Pockets, keep them coming.

you're on a roll now,
keep them coming and fast.
Don't want nobody to forget,
When we get a Northern blast.

I shall turn in my Carharts
Maybe sell them to Al Gore.
And cover up my carbon footprint
This global warming I may adore.

In the minus 20 degrees
There are some things that I must do.
Feed a bunch of hungry animals,
and get them water too.

So does it all mean
I can get away from this blasted cold?
Should I be so skeptical,
As these lies they do unfold?

This terrible global warming,
And the things that man has done.
Maybe it has something to do with nature,
And the actions of the sun.

Now this could be some fun,
laying on the beach in ole' Montan.
Grazing out all winter,
Temperatures like the Yucatan.

The worst part of this image
that keeps coming into my mind
Is all of those darn Southerners
moving in to Northern climes.

Not that I mind them,
To visit with them and such.
But they don't know the first thing
About antifreeze and such.

And then just when you least expect it
Mother Nature will call once more.
And all of these transplants
Will be knocking on your door.

"Things have frozen up so bad,
I have no water or heat.
Maybe you can help me out
At your table can we have a seat?

We have no food nor water,
Our animals are in dispair.
Got any extra hay and grain,
That maybe you could share?

We will pay you back next year
When our tax rebate comes in."
Wost of all these people can say this,
and say it with a big grin.

All I can say is this is Mother Nature,
I have lived through this before.
I have shoveled 4 foot drifts
To open up the front door.

Then you turn around,
And there's no water to be had.
Wind a howling and temps on the rise,
Thats when things really get bad.

Nature is a thing of cycles,
A lot of ups then some downs.
Those who don't believe that
Are either idiots or clowns.

Got to go out now,
Throw another log on to the fire.
Get the house warmed up,
So then I can retire.

I hope that during my sleep
I dream of warm times and summer days.
Green grazing all year around
So I forget about my winter ways.

But I know in this reality
There are things that I must do.
Plug in the pickups and tractors,
Get ready for snow drifts and cold too.

Thanks for the Poem SW.
Really tells the truth. If you've lived in the northland long enough, in the back of your mind you know a big one or two is a coming. You just hope it's in the wintertime not in the middle of calfing.
I think it's part mother natures way of getting rid of the riff raff that accumulates after a few warm winters. Also about the only way we can get our waterholes filled.
PS It's -21 this morning, colder'n heck but darn it is beautiful out.---EP

:) Enjoyed your pics and both the poems!! So far this week, gregs had to fix our frozen waterer twice and walked two miles home in a snow squall cause the battery on the bale truck quit mid feed...the joys

-21 and THICK,thick fog this morn...but the frost that comes after is worth it...if your not driving.
