Wife didn't get any pictures of us practicing because it was very dusty. This will be our first time we have ever done ranch sorting for a contest its normaly for work. I know one thing it has hooked Marty and I. We are going to hit anyone we see in the area.

Thanks for the pics! I don't know what ranch sorting is, or if it is the same as what we call 'team sorting', but I really enjoy team sorting competitions. They tend to be a little more like something you would actually do at home (although much faster) as opposed to team penning. Team penning is wrong on so many levels..... although I am embarassed to say I kinda enjoyed doing that a little too

Good luck tomorrow!

Team sorting is a two person team. They call the number out on the animal and you work up from there. Its what we do in cutting the calves off the cows in the pen. Here is a youtube video of it. Its fun. :D

Yeap Lil Lilly and a friend of hers did that at the fair this year for the first time. 5 critters. all numbered 1-5 and they call out a number...say 3, you start with that one and go 4 5 1 2 in that order. They'd never done it before and were pretty quick. I was surprised they done so well, and placed.

Just remember slower is faster.

I see it runs the same way we do it up here, only we have 10 head in a little larger pen with 3 riders. Last year or two they often take the end of the pen out so instead of having a gate, you just have a line drawn which adds an extra degree of difficulty.
It is a lot of fun, and is as close to ranchwork as you'll find in competition.
Teamwork is everything, and speed isn't necessarily the answer.

Well we got 9th out of 22 and made it back for the short go. That was fun Marty and I are going to go to more of these ranch sorting in the area. The fun thing is we beat the cowboys that help us work our cattle and they went several times and we went once.
