About three yrs ago, greg broke one of his hardfast rules he made 31 yrs ago when we married...NO dogs in the house, when he bought me a little Shitz-Zu for my birthday. My grandson named him after his best daycare friend Ash{like Ash Cooper  }Now Ash is my shadow, greg complains he jealous because I love Ash more then him,not true but Ash never talks back to me and loves me even when I wear my long flannel PJ's....

Anyways....tonight was our first thunderstorm of the yr...rain included :D Ash is pretty anxious with the thunder and wants out during the Storm,so I let him out on the deck...which he NEVER leaves, until tonight  I couldn't find him,I called and called, went out in the storm, which if you knew me you'd know I'm normally hunkered down in the bathroom with the fan on so I can't see or hear the storm...  I still couldn't find him,and was totally convinced he got out in the bush and the Yokes were devoring him. This looking went on for three hrs...greg snoozing soundly, me,calling and looking wherever I could think of....finally about 1.30am
I decided heartbroken to lay on the couch and try and sleep...the couch ,because I left the front door window open and kitchen window hoping i maybe could hear something. Not sleeping and pretty sad my buddy was yote food,I heard this teeny bark,so grab the flashlight and head back out in the pouring rain,I call and follow dog barks, close to half a mile down the road, here Ash is,bound tightly to a barb wire fence. Sitting in a pretty good mud puddle in the dark of a rainy night I work for over half an hour to get him untangled. He bounced happily back home,me dripping wet, muddy from head to toe, hair curled like Orphan Annies, mascara running down my face I follow him. Hes now sleeping on my side of the bed beside greg, who's oblivious anythings happened, and I'm sitting here warming myself up with a warm cup of hot chocolate....Dogs.....

I hear ya. :? But we love'em anyway, don't we. I'm relieved that he is back. Your story was way too long and held me in dreadful suspense.

Glad Ash is safe and sound and that you were able to learn there is nothing to fear from a storm. If lightning were to hit us there is a good chance we wouldn't be caring what happened next anyway.

I am proud of you Mairi for not waking Greg, I would have been invited to help look.

Mrs. Greg, I thought the dog was going to be the hero of the story. Instead it is you that is the hero. You were willing to risk your own life to save that of a friend, and there is no greater calling than that. You did a great job. :-)

Awwwww so glad ya found him.

Had a similar experience the other night....but not from the owner perspective.

Saturday night after most of the fireworks had been done here at the house. (very little cuz we didn't want to catch nothin on fire) Mr Lilly was out of snuff, so we took off for Roans Prairie. (nearest thing open 16 miles).

We turned off our road, and drove a lil ways, and somethin was runnin down the road. It was small. Conversation at the dinner table at Inlaws that night was the rabbit that's been eatin our squash. And how Mr Lilly said, "He's gotta go" LOL So my first thought was, "Oh no, it's a rabbit, and hubby's in rabbit hunt mode" This lil thing was haulin butt too. He zigged, and zagged a few times, and I said..."I don't think that's a rabbit, it was tan kinda". So he speeded up.....so did the lil critter. Mr Lilly was bearin down on it drivin the jeep tryin to see what it was. Well turned out....ITS a PUPPY!!!!! I said, "STOP, it's too little to be left out here in the woods by itself it'll get ate!!!!" So I got out, and started walkin toward it. It kept runnin, and runnin and runnin. I talked sweet, soft, come here baby'd it.....and I walked, and walked prolly a 1/2 mile. Then finally it stopped runnin and turned to look at me. I squatted down, thinkin maybe I wouldn't look so intimidatin. Cuz Mr Lilly was followin real slow with the jeep, but still my shadow looked huge on the road, from the headlights LOL. I eased forward a few steps and crouched down again. Talkin to it. Finally it started runnin towards me. I was sooooo relieved. Then it zipppped passed me hahaha. I'm thinkin...oh great, now I gotta chase it the other way. But he'd ran past me and around the backside of me, and was crouched down on my other side. Oh my goodness it was a baby wiener dog, maybe 10 or 12 weeks old. We all know how I feel about my 3 weiner dogs. I couldn't believe someone had dumped him. He was soooo sweet. Givin puppy kisses, and HOT...oh my goodness he was hotttttt. So we drove back to the first house on our road, to ask if they'd lost a dog. No...they hadn't. So we went to the second drive way....people we didn't know....and their house is wayyyy off the road back in the woods. They were outside and had been doin fireworks too. The lady came to the jeep when we pulled in. And Mr Lilly asked her if they'd lost a dog. She said, "We just realized my baby chiwieny is gone." I could tell by the look on her face that she thought we were gonna tell her we'd ran over it. I held him up, and she grabbed him, thankin us profusely for bringin her baby home. Somehow he'd slipped out of the house, and apparently no one knew. Fireworks had skeered the crap outta him, and he'd ran. Then us and the jeep lights prolly didn't help matters any at all...lol I was so glad to return him to them. Even tho I'da took him home and taken him in if we hadn't found the owners. I'd hate to know one of mine went missin.....made me hug mine tighter when we got home that night. And of course they all looked at me like I was a traiter cuz I had "other dog smell on me" from holdin him close and lovin on him to keep him calm.

All worked out well in the end.

That was a good story, Lilly. With a great ending.

I found a puppy several years ago when going home from town.
It was at night, and raining and this puppy was in the middle of
the road; cold and soaking wet. I got out and picked her up. I went to all the houses on that block (in the rain) and everyone said it wasn't their puppy.

So I took her home to the ranch with me. She was an Airdale.
I'd never been around an Airdale before and it didn't take us
long to really fall in love with this puppy. We called her Petey.
We tried to find the owner and sure enough, we finally did.
By that time, we were really attached to her and asked the owner
if we could keep her. We were willing to buy her even. Nope. He
wanted her. So (tearfully, for me) we gave her up. After that, I saw that
puppy running all over town. Finally she got ran over and broke her
leg. The guy did take her to the vet and got it casted. So then she
ran all over town with a cast on her leg. A year later he called us up
and wanted to GIVE US the pup. By then she had the bad habit
of not staying home. So we declined. That little deal was hard on me.
But I've wanted an Airdale pup ever since.
