Even though this cow doesn't have any. She was born on a cold night four years ago. She is pretty efficient
because she doesn't ever eat any cake, and always has a good early calf.

Hope the weather moderates for you Soap. I talked to my cousin the other day, he said he can't remember a colder calving season and he's been doing it for 30 years.

New windmill on the hill?

A new windmill was put up on the hill a year ago last summer, when the old mill gave up the ghost. The mill on the hill was used originally to fill a reservoir that supplied water to several tanks throughout the corrals. This system is now run by an electric submersible well and branches off to four automatic waterers and several hydrants. The windmill now has a long plastic lead pipe which follows the contour of the ground and fills an eleven foot tank at the base of the hill. This waters our calving lot for first-calf heifers, and is a source of water if the electricity goes out. I like having a nearby windmill to look at last thing at night and first thing in the morning, to use as a wind gage and weather indicator. It just makes the outfit seem more "ranchy."

It's a lot colder this year than it was the year you helped us calve.

That was clear back in 2002. Time flies. :-)
