While I am in the picture mood, I will add a few more.

A week ago last Sunday, when I finished helping a neighbor ship calves, it was a perfect afternoon to go exploring with the kids. We drove over to their favorite badlands spot to hike around, and I took the camera with me. Here are a few shots of what we saw.

A shot of some cutbanks where our cattle can go to get out of the Harding County winter wind.

Another simular shot.

Same area and a winter tank with drink holes and a bleeder valve to keep water circulated.

This is an interesting looking Pinnacle.

Another angle.

Neat looking cactus.

This is natures version of the "mummy" face. Can you see it?

Hey Tap - I can see the mummy!!! Could the kids pick it out without you helpin'? Casey's kids usually get this stuff faster than Gramma does.

Question - where is that pinnacle located? I don't think I've seen that one before.

Liberty Belle, you are giving me too much credit. The kids saw this "face" way before I did. They are pretty quick to see stuff like that. This pinnacle you asked about is over east of my house in our winter pasture. Just on the north side of the divide. There was one like it nearer to the highway, and it fell over a few years ago. There is yet another smaller thicker version also that is still standing.

nr, lots of fossils have been found in our general area in simular terrain, but none on our ranch.

Very interesting shots...so did ya round up the cattle in that terrain?

We go into that pasture sometime in November-December, depending on the weather. Then they stay there till calving, and that is about the only time we gather the pasture unless we have to doctor an animal or something like that. One year we did ride through and sort the older end off by using their year brands, so we could sell part of them as bred cows.

A lot of people around here would probably calve in there, but we have found that it saves us so much hay to use that pasture during the winter months, it's more valuable than a calving pasture to us. We don't feed hay there unless it gets pretty rough, and we gather them to cake (starting in late Jan, early Feb. unless the weather is bad earlier) every other day because it is hard to gather them.

Hey Tap,
Great pictures. I shot my first deer about 200 yards south of that pinnacle. Dad shot a really nice 5 point mulie not too far from there. I hear your mom and my grandma are baby sitting for your brother and his wife. Hope all is well.

Awesome! Great ATV country! :D :D You got alot of Rattlesnakes up there?

Yeah right Cal. Wanna race me across it?

I don't know what to think about the rattlesnakes. When I was younger we used to kill lots of them, but lately you don't see as many. I don't know why that is, but I am not asking either, as I am petrified of snakes. Yuck!!!!! I saw 3 all together this year. God, I hate snakes. :!:

Beautiful spread Tap

Thank you Angus and lazy ace. I would say that there is for sure more open country, with creeks and rolling hills then the badlands, but we have a good mix of all types in this area. It is not as scenic as some places I have been, but it is nice in my eyes. We have a little bit of every thing around here.

The first year on this place we saw quite a few snakes, then we
have seen hardly any, til this year.
This year we saw more than we like to see. Mr. FH says we lost
a replacement heifer to snakebite. Her head was all swollen up and the
tip of her tongue was black. So she must have got it right on the
end of the tongue. What a horrible way to die...poor thing.

I don't know anyone who likes snakes.

We don't have any venemous ones around here for the most part... Oh, there is probably on every once i a while bt most of our snakes are just run of the mill harmless things like Fox snakes and garder snakes.. That being said I still turn inside out everytime I see one or jump about 20 feet.. Worked at a pet shop once and took care of the darn things but they still make my skin crawl.... Something absolutely visceral about the whole thing.

Great pictures of some pretty amazing country Tap. Thank you for posting them.

Is that pinnacle a one-of-a-kind feature or are there more scattered about you countryside? You could say it's an "outstanding" feature!

Maple Leaf Angus, there were at least three of those in our pasture, but one fell over 6-8 years ago. The one I showed everyone is a lot bigger than it appears on a picture. The third one I have a regular photo of, and maybe I can find it and scan it off. I will look sometime soon. It is way bigger at the base, but not as tall. If you notice on the picture I posted, that there is some sod on the very top, and even some cactus plants too I think. It is not a very big area either.

Great pictures...keep em coming :) When we first moved here we would kill 30 some snakes a year  Now its down to 10 or 15. I didn't even think about them when I was crawling around under the house, probably should've.
