Debbie is gone for a week taking her parents to doctor appointments in Williams Lake and Kamloops. Depending on her Dad's prognosis, she should be home on the weekend. She will also get a chance to visit 2 of her sisters.

Just me and the dogs to watch over the Ponderosa. I wish they could learn to cook and clean. :D

Off to feed the home cows, Lead guard ahead.

Fed. I hope to sort 50 head off the Morrison Meadow bunch to add to these today. We keep this herd at about 200 to fit the summer range at home.

An assortment of bull and steer calves, yearling bulls and an old crock that decided she couldn't exist on hay alone. Not sure if the grain will do much good either. :(

Thanks, to answer your first question, yes. We are at less than half of usual. ( There is no such thing as normal when considering weather.) :D

I hope to get to Mac's, it will depend on how Debbie's Dad is doing at that time.

Good to see you gainfully employed and kept off the streets - kitchen work or otherwise! :wink:

Do you feed cows any supplement in the winter ?

At times we will use tubs but usually only when they are rustling on their own. If there are any that are thinner than they should be we will sort them off and feed a little something extra to them. Those cows don't get second chances though. We want cows that will thrive on what we produce.
Our heifer calves are wintering on hay and tubs this year instead of 3 lbs of pellets/barley. Half the cost and they are doing well. I only expect them to be a green 650 lbs by May 15 anyway. Young bulls will get supplemented, the rest make it on hay.

Some of them don't. We do have a guard dog that is great for coyotes and will let us know if wolves or a bear is about so enough survive to make a little profit.

It's -22 F out there this morning. Glad I woke up early to start the plant and plug in the tractor. :D

Looks like your up to no good as usual! :wink: Debbie should look into a satelite camera/shock collar set up so she can keep tabs on ya and make corrections as needed. Mrs. H can give her the phone numbers and websites for the set up we have. :shock: For the record, Leaning H Livestock has been goat free for 2 years. But we are fixing to lamb three head of suffolk ewes here in a couple weeks. Little H decided she likes showing sheep and has jumped into the sheep business. We gotta lamb this early to make weight for the stockshow. Anyway, things look good up your way even if you dont have adult supervision at the moment. Hope all goes well at the doctor with her folks.
 
Got down to +34F last night and up to +37F now - - - should hit +48F this evening and they say +58F tomorrow and +62F on Saturday

Snow should be gone then - - - but back to winter mid week next week

Cows are able to graze again so that will save more hay.

Larry went to visit his 86 year old grandfather in a very rural area. After spending a great evening chatting the night away, Larry's grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon and eggs. Larry noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking, 'Are these plates clean?'

His grandfather replied, 'They're as clean as cold water can get em. Just you go ahead and finish your meal'.

For lunch the old man made hamburgers. Again, Larry was concerned about the plates as it appeared to have tiny specks around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked, 'Are you sure these plates are clean?'

Without looking up the old man said, 'I told you before, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don't you worry, I don't want to hear another word about it'.

Later that afternoon, as he was leaving, his grandfather's dog started to growl, and wouldn't let him pass. Larry yelled and said, 'Grandfather, your dog won't let me get to my car'.

Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted, 'COLDWATER, GO LAY DOWN NOW, YAH HERE ME!!!

Good story. I heard nearly the same one, but "as clean as soap and water can get them." When they were done eating, ol' Gramps put the plates on the floor and hollered, "Here Soap, here Water." :wink:

Gcreek, things are looking mighty fine in your neck of the woods. The cattle are carrying just the right amount of condition, and your cowboy methods look pretty easily accompished without undue wear and tear on livestock. Thanks for letting us ride along with you for the day.

Cows look great. I like the way you are feeding everything. Would
work for us.

Hope things are going as well as possible with Debbie's parents. She's
got a tough job on her hands.

About the dogs and dishes, we were visiting some friends in Oklahoma
and the lady of the house put the dishes in the dishwasher. They have
a really cute minature Australian Shepherd, He came in when the
lid on the dishwasher was down and proceeded to lick the plates.
The Mrs. looked at me and said, "everyone around here has a job...
that one's his..." :D
 
These dogs would gladly wash my dishes if I let them. I just don't like the seasoning of dog slobber mixed in with the next meal. :D

Thomas did get to ride, it, easier to move my feet around him than to watch which tire he's trying to go under. :roll:

The cows pretty much worked themselves until the last 30 or so, just like always. :D I just had to keep switching the gate. From the time the last one came through the gate until they were sorted it wasn't much more than an hour. When they did get sticky the dogs moved them for me from the back. I did have one wild little bag beat me to the wrong pen but she came out without much fuss.
 
Low of +52F and 1 1/2" of rain over night - - - supposed to get to the mid +60sF today

Crazy weather - - - should be back to normal mid week ( highs in the mid 30s and lows in the teens )

Don't take anything on tires off the road for a couple of days or you will sure make ruts.
