I would like to attend an A.I. class. I was hoping someone on here might know of a place to start looking. I found a weeklong class in Kansas but would like to stay closer to Utah. If i could attend a preg-checking school as well i'd do it. Thanks.

There is one over our way in Ontario, Oregon. It is through Treasure Valley Community College. I took it a few years ago. Its a very very good course. Was only a week long deal but was all the schooling one would need.

Try this link, I bet they could steer you in the right direction

if the one in Kansas you're looking at is the Graham school? go for it, I don't think you'll be disapointed

I looked at Graham's website and thought it looked good. Have any of ya'll attended their school and what did ya think of em'? Thanks for the good info so far!!!

Hubby went a looooonggggg time ago, (he was 14!) and has always said they were the best.

Colorado used to have a great complete ranch vet course...Think it was at Fort Collins-- AI, pulling bad presentations, prolapses, c-sections, preg testing, removing cancer eyes, everything...Month or so long...My old buddy attended it 40 years ago- and is pretty handy with his home vet work and better than most vets on preg testing.....Tests for a lot of neighboring ranchs- altho under the law he can't charge- but can take donations  ...
I don't know if it exists anymore or not...

Jack Hedrick's School for Stockmen, near Livermore, Colorado, west of Fort Collins.

Shoer and I took a course here at Bovine Elite. So many that we looked at use fake cow parts. We got to actually work on live cows. I don't know about any of the one's up that way. But the one we took was very interestin. Fun. And I learned alot. It was both A-I and preg testin.

Harold Miller taught me. I think he's now trained over 5,000 people to AI. I highly recommend him. He's in north eastern Colorado.

I took my AI class in school, I think 1-2 lectures and 1 lab per week for half a semester.

Is preg checking really something you can only due occasionally? I think it takes vets quite a bit of time to "get it", I've switched to the blood tests due to limited vet service here. Not the best option for those who sort there cows to the cull wagon during preg checks.

For AI school, you might try Select Sires...I believe your Select Sires is Cache Valley. Here in the Dakotas it seems they do most of the training. Lazy Ace went to a Select Sires school, and I learned in college at Colorado State from Don LeFevre.

From this webiste:

http://www.selectsires.com/address.aspx

You can find the contact for the Select Sires nearest you. I'd ask them...if they don't do the training, I'd say it's a sure bet they will know who does.

As for the preg checking, Lazy Ace also learned that in college. One thing I'd caution you about, is if you plan on preg checking more than your own herd you might want to check into the laws of your land. In many states, it is illegal for "lay" folks to preg check, and the Veterinarians take it pretty seriously. In ND, I bet the Vet. licensing board hears two or three complaints a year of lay people preg checking. In SD, it is completely legal for lay people to preg check.

Cheers---

I took my course in Lethbridge, AB. It was a week long course and we learned both AI and pregchecking.

As for pregchecking occaisionally, that is what I do. More or less once a year. I am reasonably accurate on cows over 90 days, not so good on earlier cows. I recheck anything I can't tell on (about 15%), and around 1/2 of those I will call bred the second time around. I just make a point of checking our cows when the late ones should be about 90 days. We pull our bulls.

I will look into Utah laws and make sure i can help other people preg check! I wanta do my little bunch but we are a long way from anywhere and it would be handy to know how to help the neighbors.
I'll take Northern Rancher chasing mulies ANYTIME! Forget teaching me to preg. check I WANT A WHITETAIL! :D
And if i end up in Oregon i wanta help Nicky chase them pretty herefords!

If you can get away you should go to Bovine-Elite. Very good instructors and you spend almost your whole time in cattle. I got considerably better at preg checking and AI in 5 days. They will also give you a discount on any supplies(excluding semen) after you complete the class.

My business is artificial insemination, ultrasounding, and is called Rocky Mountain Ultrasound & Genetics. I have been in the A.I. Business for several years now, we just put on a school in Preston Idaho (3 days). We can put one on any where there is a need. We have put them on right there in Delta Utah before. We can teach the basics of AI and Preg palpation, than the rest comes with practice and experience. I will tell you the laws for Utah state that only VETS can preg cattle for income. You can definately preg your own cattle, be careful and watchful that if your doing it for a neighbor that there is no exchange of benefits. You will eventually pay fines for unlicensed business practice.

Few years ago I lived in Northern Utah and I live in Idaho now, but do quite a bit of business in the majority of the Western States, and quite a bit in Utah.
