A.I. ing hiefers

CIDR's work pretty well on heifers but we've done it every way under the sun. It depends more on the feeding regimen and body condition of the heifer than the synch program-the program is usually what gets blamed when a breeding deal goes bad. Big fat stale heifers are about the worst things to try and get bred.

I agree on this with NR also last year we started the heifers on silage about a month before we AI'ed them looks like our best take to date.I think if you can get them to flush on green grass or a green chopped feed you will have better conception rates.

We use the MGA method and try to have them on an increasing plane of nutrition right before AI. They stay in the lot all summer because I have the feed and save the grass for my cow herd.

We been AIing since 1964 and have tried about everything thats come down the pipe. For us CDIR's are by far the best thing to come along. They can be costly but they sure can shortin calving season. To save some money we give a shot of lutalace to everything, and breed for 7 days on the 7th day we put CDIR'S in everything thats not breed, we do shots when we put then in and take them out . Also use them on cows. Works really good on late cows to move them up, we put them in 30 days after calvings and had very good luck. WE HAVE A CLOSED HERD SO WE USE ALL CDIR'S 2 TIMES, WITH VERY GOOD LUCK. We will pull from a cow rise off with the stuff that they say to use, can't remember the name, and put back in another cow 5 min later and we kept use ones from 1 breeding season to another, with very good luck also, but we do not leave them in the sun or let sit wet. We keep them in a frig, in zip lock bags when you open them in next calving season don't sniff the bag. its not pretty

I just do heat detection ,and AI as they come into a natural heat. I have gotten better results with a natural heat than an induced sync heat. If you do not want to use CIDRS and still want to sync I would induce all , let them have a heat and then breed on the next natural heat.

You are only as good as your heat detection.

I would agree that Natural Heat detection is the Best.

But if Synching heifers, first and foremost I would use MGA it is the best synch for heifers only if you are able to mix in a ration and have adequate bunk space for every animal.

Second I would use the 14 day CIDR program, it is far better way on heifers vs the 5 day or 7 day. Much cleaner and less problems. And Higher conception when using any of the CIDR programs.

with 5 day or 7 day I have had and seen many other have problems with the ones not getting bred on AI service, just not getting bred for at least 2 more cycles

Just my HONEST opinion! Seeing how I AI several thousand a year. And I am no expert, you need to ask the purebred breeders that breed just a few a year and or have another job not related to the cattle industry that know all there is to know

I thought I was doing just that!
not asking for someone to make their self proclaimed superiority over the rest of the posters

RMUG your opinion is appreciated your greater than thou attitude is NOT

you percentage bred will always be greater with watching the heifers for heat. one method that works good is to heat detect for 5 days. after 5 days give a shot of lutalyse to those you haven't bred, then heat detect for another 5 days. then turn out the clean up bull.

I tried something new last year I A.Ied my heifers then turn them out into a herd of bulls. I used angus semen and herford bulls so we will see who got to the uterus first. I will say this much that when I preg checked 60 days later I was 70 % on the cider cycle and 25% on the on the next cycle and 2%on the next. This is on a herd of 50 head with 3 that were open at preg checking. I have never had this kind of conception before off of ciders before. I am excited to see how my conception on A.Iing is though.

Without hijacking the thread, what do ya'll consider a successful % of A.I.ed heifers that catch? I got 50% on my first go around which made me happy. I'd like to get better and wondered what to shoot for! :D Good thread!
