Forecasts are getting better, imo, but the accuracy still is FAR from dependable.
Accurate forecasts will help, but how long will it take for us to trust them???
Then we have to act on them. So may be some time before we will be 'well prepared' for snow, let alone storms.
Rapid City Journal gets comments all too often lately, apparently written by 'couch potatoes' with little respect for the rigors of raising cattle, who icily ask if ranchers are prepared for winter storms.
Big implication is that we ignored the crystal clear warnings of Atlas, and have only ourselves to blame for the huge loss of cattle in that storm.
Personally, I'd like to see them try raising cattle except that it would be too hard on the cattle! We didn't experience much loss, only because of luck and Blessings from a Higher Power. Neighbors with cattle in very similar situations close by had great losses. Conditions can vary dramatically within very short distances, etc. We got mostly rain, while not at all far away, there was much more snow. WORST, imo, is the fact that people ignorant of facts of raising cattle in harsh climates, is that putting them all in barns is not a guarantee of keeping cattle safe! Snow can drift into very tight buildings and cause pneumonia like symptoms, or they can get too warm from their own body heat and then suffer illnesses and death........and mors!
We can only take reasonable care, then pray for the best, imo. AND, pray that those ignorant of the facts will be more generous of spirit and pray for our safety instead of criticizing us for our actions.
