Last spring a fairly good sized snapping turtle layed her eggs in my g-ma's flower garden...Well today they hatched! While I was there at least 6 little turtles made their way out to the lake...how they know where to go amazes me..but they followed the exact trail their mama did...So this is a photo story of one of the tiny turtles...enjoy

That is a great sequence Jassy! I'm impressed that you were there to witness the event and photograph it for us.

In mid June, we had a turtle lay eggs next to our garage drive. It was what we call a Painted turtle with a green top and orange markings on the bottom.

I flagged the spot so that we wouldn't drive on it and have waited all this time for the excitement that you had. But so far, nothing has erupted. I've nearly given up and pulled the flags, but I think I will wait a little longer now.

I had already given up on this particular egg nest too...talk about shocked when they were hatching today..this late in September...sure hope the little guys make it through this cold snap we're having.

Now that's just plum cute!!!!!...

Once again Jassy you were in the right place at the right time. How little was he. I'm guessin his body somewhre about the size of a fifty cent peice??? How far is it to the lake? ...... looks like he'd be tired by the time he reaches the end of the sidewalk lol.

Thanks everyone...it was one of those rare moments that I was at the right place at the right time...I spent about an hour laying down on the grass and sidewalk snapping pictures....so this little story is just a short version of the little turtle's adventure...it was pretty fun to do and watch. I wished I could of stayed longer to see how many more came out. Several years ago we found a nest that the coons had dug up..and there were about 40 eggs in that nest. Makes ya wonder how many actually survive and hatch! We had spooked the coon off of the nest before he got em all...but I'm sure he went back after we left and finished his snackin.

Lilly...you guessed about right on the size...about a 50cent piece..pretty small.

it would have been very hard for me to let the snapper go into the wild. around here the best snapper is a dead snapper. now the red eared slider and the box turtles I can live with, but snappers.....not a chance!

great pix though
