I finally finished all the farm work & haying for the season and the cows are still out on pasture till the end of October... so, I took off for a few days.

Sort of a working vacation to the Fire Academy.

We had a lot of fun riding around town and back & forth from the motel to the resturaunts in this rig. The horse on the right is 20 years old and is matched up to her 7 year old daughter.

Pretty cool station sign out front of where most of my classes were held.

The survival maze. This simulates escaping from one room to another by first knocking a whole in the dry wall & squeezing through between the wall studs.

The 21" culvert is also in the survival maze. It's not for the closterphobic.

Part way in.

Out the other side.

Here's another student. A little bigger guy, had to take his bottle off and push it ahead of him but not to far... remember that's your only air supply.

He made it and putting his pack back on. Look close at his face mask. That's wax paper on the inside. There's no visibility in a smoke filled house so why should you be able to see during training either?

Ladder Training.. do you think a 100 lb. firefighter could bring a 500 lb. victim down a ladder? It's easy as pie with this technique. They are basiclly just sitting on your knee and when you start to down climb you apply pressure, sandwiching their body between you and the ladder thus adding more friction.

They have some top notch equipment. I'm fire engine red with envy.

The drive home. The west side of Wolf Creek Pass.

Looking west towards Pagosa Springs, the San Juan river in bottom of the valley.

Do you see the cliff in the top center of the previous photo? This is taken from below it on the highway.

I see light at the end of the tunnel and the end of this post.
I hope you enjoyed it. I sure did, made some new friends and learned alot of new skills. God's Speed my fellow Ranchers.

I know I should get out the map, I'm not at all familiar with Colorado geography; but.....

Are you anywhere near the San Juan mountains? On our little vacation/hunting trip, we drove over to Montrose to visit some friends and passed that mountain range. I have to say I am more than in awe! I have to hunt there some day!

Well, I'm near the area of the San Juan mountains. They start about 60 miles or there abouts west southwest from my ranch. I'm about a 3 hour drive east of Montrose. The San Juan national forest comprises a good chunk of Colorado's southwest mountains.

Nice pictures! I traveled Wolf Creek twice a week for about 3 - 4 years. When I got off the truck, they were still working on the tunnel. At that time, we were going over Cumbres a lot to hit Farmington because Wolf Creek was closed nights. I especially appreciate the pictures of the tunnel, because I haven't seen the finished project. Doing away with the "narrows" is a great improvement.

I also appreciate the volunteer firemen. I serve on Edison Fire Protection board, and a grandson is a Lt. in the cadet program at Falcon. He wants to be a career firefighter. I did enjoy this post. Keep up the good work!

I had you pictured in the southern end of the valley like maybe Del Norte, but you must be up around Saguache???????????

That was most interesting, Triangle Bar. Thanks for the pictures.
and as for the volunteer fireman, wherever they may be:

:tiphat:

This really brings to mind the old C.W. McCall song, "Wolf Creek Pass."

We had a high school boy working for us when that song was popular and he just loved C.W. McCall. He sounded just like him and knew all the words to that song (and others).
He was our noon entertainment. :D

You have to be in some kind of shape physically and mentally to do that. we went that way to Farmington last year it is really pretty country.

You're right! And a person would probably have to be a little insane to shoot anything near that top! Leanin' H says it looks like dragon teeth.

Thanks to all for the nice comments and am glad you enjoyed the pictures.

Shortgrass, good luck to your grandson. I hope he can fulfill his dreams. You're right, I live pretty close to Saguache in the north end of the valley.

Didn't the truck run into the side of the feed store in downtown Pagosa Springs. :D :D

I was getting good mileage letting it run down the westside of Wolf Creek Pass. If I had to try some of those drills the rest of the crew would have practice doing CPR for sure-were lucky to have people like you.
