All you ROAD/DITCH hunters...READ THIS!!!!

RBA you are right and I am sorry for this young man and his family, What makes me mad is that it takes illegal acts like this to keep law-enforcement on top of whatever the illegal act is.

Regards

Red Barn, I read where the vehicle was from Shawnee county, is this right? one rumor said a kid from Marion county was involved.... if it is the one I know, I am not suprised!

hope they nab them all!

RBA.....you have said alot with very little. This EXACT same thing happened in western SD a couple years back......some clown shot at a goose decoy with a rifle, ........killed a man.....if i remember right, the man was a game warden also or worked for the game and fish.....very sad and it gives proper road hunters a bad name...kind of like this clown in omaha gives gun owners a bad name. you cant compair the 2.

Kola tried to call this road hunting........it is NOT.

Calling this road hunting is like calling a semi auto a full auto....calling this road hunting is like calling Michael Vick a good pet owner........calling this a road hunting incident is like calling a fella who dont feed his cattle a rancher.......like sayin Bill Clinton didnt have sexual relations with that woman......

OH ya.........a wheat field is not a feeder you dip stick! Im sure you have a feeder just like all the other "ethical" hunters down in TX...on a timer.....and the deer come a runnin when they hear the thing start up ......calling a wheat field a feeder is like calling this thread a road hunting incident.....if thats the case....every land owner has a feeder, weather its wheat, alfalfa, corn, or what ever.

Not that it matters, but since Kola wants to point fingers, the accident that happen in SD involved a LANDOWNER shooting from HIS LAND onto a goose spread on PUBLIC ground to scare the geese away. He left the scene of the crime to without reporting it.

Now before you all jump down my throat for this or that, I am not pointing fingers. There are a-holes in all aspects of life, landowner, hunter, boss, employee, in-laws  and siblings. All SDH, Happy, and I have been saying is we follow the laws when we hunt the right-of-ways. Go ahead curse the ones that don't. I don't condone their actions either, but some landowners are just as guilty too.

Apparently the law has located and interviewed all three persons that were in the pickup truck. It appears a 57 year old man did the shooting but had no idea he had hit anyone. There is some discussion of charges but none have been filed yet. The boys funeral was this morning.

I am not a hunter but still find it hard to understand how anyone with any sense can just drive down the road and shoot at geese, decoys or fence posts without knowing where their bullet could wind up. There are getting to be so many more houses in the country and with those come people out in rural areas. It isn't like it used to be where there was no one for miles. I'm off my soapbox.

Jigs, I have not heard of any Marion Co. connection....all Topeka as far as I know.

that could be........here is what i find about it.

Playing the blame game
Filed under: Mount Blogmore— Mount Blogmores @ 5:18 pm
By Kevin Woster

Periodically during the last year or so, I've received emails or telephone calls from people who thought Jay Torgerson deserved at least part of the blame for his own death.

It seems like a bizarre notion to me. But here, decide for yourself.

Torgerson was set up in a goose-decoy spread on a public walk-in hunting area in December of 2004 when he was shot in the head by Martin area farmer Brad Johnson from about an eighth of a mile away.

Martin, whose dad owned the land and leased it to Game, Fish & Parks for public hunting, said he was trying to flush geese off a field of windrowed millet. He used a rifle. It was a horrid accident, for which Johnson pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment after a prosecutor determined the incident didn't deserve a more serious manslaughter charge.

Johnson served a few weeks in jail. He also had to do community service and meet with Torgerson family members, including Jay Torgerson's mom, Carol.Carol thought a misdemeanor was small punishment for the life of her son, accident or not. She pushed for legislation to create a new negligent homicide crime, a felony, for instances like her son's death.

A legislative committee rejected the bill Friday, a tough vote, since Carol Torgerson was sitting in the audience. She pledged to keep up the fight.

The Journal story on the vote brought in the latest email expounding on Jay Torgerson's role in his own death. The reader, who came from a farm, said Torgerson could have avoided the accident simply by notifying the Johnson family that he would be hunting in the walk-in area that day.

No such notification is necessary under terms of the walk-in hunting lease that Brad Johnson's dad signed with GF&P. In fact the idea of the leases is to provide ready access to areas for the public without having to contact the individual owners. The leased areas function like regular public-hunting land. Some landowners like the leases in large part because they don't have to deal with hunters directly.

The area Torgerson was hunting is popular hunting area, regularly hunted.
The Johnson family knew that. Brad Johnson said he even checked with binoculars before he fired at decoys he thought were geese, to make sure there weren't hunters there.

But both Torgerson and his hunting parter were concealed among the decoys.

Did he play a role in this horrid accident? Or was it simply a terrible decision by Johnson?

It was outside of Martin, the landowners son shat at wehat he thought was a flock of geese , but was a decoy spread. The land was his or his fathers and the father had leased the land to GF&P for walk-in. The hunters were legal the landowners son was illrgal. It was a very tragic accident. There were charges brought, I do not remember ecxactly what they were , but it did not amount to a loss of life.

There are accidents in this world and when I can get up and look in the mirror and say I have never done anything that could have ended up a tragedy/loss of life,--- then I will have the right to judge.

This young man whom ever he is will live with this the rest of his life. Jay's family will live with their loss the rest of their life.

What he got may not have amounted to a loss of a life but then again what amount would?

I hurt for both families.

If only we were born with the wisdom we die with.

Teen Goose Hunter Shot, Killed By Person In Passing Truck
Student Hit By Shot Fired From Passing Pickup

POSTED: 11:20 am CST December 17, 2007
UPDATED: 12:06 pm CST December 18, 2007

AMERICUS, Kan. -- An Emporia State University freshman died during the weekend after being shot by someone in a passing vehicle while he was hunting for geese.

Beau Arndt, 18, of Americus, and two friends had placed several dozen goose decoys in a farm field Saturday and were lying in the snow waiting for incoming birds, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.

Arndt's companions told police that a pickup truck stopped along a nearby road and fired a rifle shot into the decoys, but hit Arndt instead and then left the scene.

Shooting waterfowl with a rifle is illegal in Kansas, as is shooting from inside a vehicle or onto someone's property without permission.

Arndt was the first person killed in a hunting accident in Kansas since 2005, state officials said.

The Emporia Gazette reported on Tuesday that witnesses described a truck they'd seen as a late 1970s model Ford pickup with a standard cab and a Shawnee County license plate.

A witness told authorities there were three men inside.

The newspaper reported that the cab and front end of the truck were red and the bed was orange.

The rear of the bed had an old Ford logo on it, which the newspaper reported as being three blocks - one large, one medium and one small.

Authorities urged anyone with any information to call the sheriff's office at 342-5545, the Lyon County Crimestoppers organization at 342-2273 or 1-800-KS CRIME.

Off your drugs today or something????

You posted a story that happened in kansas and later blamed road hunters, right of way hunters, whatever you want to call me I don't care. .

I mentioned and SDH posted the story about a landowner in SD that did the excat same thing. Are you on the level now :D

That story also tried to twist things around and blame the hunter. Pure BULLSH!T That man while on his land, shot a rifle from his truck window at a goose. Granted is was a tragic accident and he probably does feel real bad about it, but had he follow just ONE law of the 2 or 3 he broke, it would have never happened.

I think the "C" word was a bit over the top.

my wife helps me sort and work the cattle, and the madder I get, the looser my tounge runs. about every work is apt to come rolling out...some in very unique groupings.

one time, and I mean ONE time the "C" word popped out. she stopped me, and in no uncertain terms explained that there was no way I would use that word again, or I would have to sit to pee the rest of my life.....

I try very very hard to NOT use that word.

These 2 or 3 guys are the "spokespeople' for road hunting????

If these guys are the poster boys for that....I'd venture to guess it's gonna be s short lived sport.

I think I'll sum it up by this one statement:

"Stupid is as stupid does"

Besides, they'll prob end up shooting each other before it's over anyway!

As much as I dislike Kolouraven and her liberal mindset what those SO CALLED sportsmen have said about her is totally uncalled for!!!
If these guys are the future of hunting, then I think hunting should be outlawed!
