Alltel closed all of it's stores and service was shut off yesterday at 1:30pm all across Montana.
There was no warning. A lot of really mad people up here.
All store employees were fired on Friday night at closing. They had no warning.

Just letting all of you who have this service have a heads up. Don't know if they are going to do it in other states.
Some of the customers had pre-paid for the service and doubt if they are going to get a refund. No one here can get through to the company, they keep getting a recording.

Here a company called Windstream bought out ALLTEL last year as Alltel " reorganized" themselves.

Didn't Verizon take over Alltel?

Not here....maybe it's a regional " thang".............. :???:

You made me curious...Wiki says it happened.....

On June 5, 2008, Verizon Wireless announced it would acquire Alltel Wireless in a deal valued at $28.1 billion. The merger was approved by the FCC on November 4, 2008, and completed on January 9, 2009. With this merger, Verizon Wireless now has approximately 83.7 million wireless subscribers and covers nearly the entire United States population[4] making it the largest network in the country by area covered and number of subscribers. However, 2.1 million of these customers will soon be divested, per the conditions of FCC and DOJ approval of the merger.

The Alltel name will eventually be retired after 65 years of business. Customers should begin seeing Verizon Wireless on their statements and other material formerly carrying the name as early as March 2009.

Hmmm.... well here Alltel became Windstream......and the cell phones went to AT& T.

The whole mess is just a bunch of thieves anyway..

I had some problems with Alltel, had to call the Consumer Protection Agency in Helena. They said Alltel was not a good company and I wouldn't have a prayer in heck EXCEPT...they had just had a talk
with them because of some other complaints they had had and because of that, I might be in luck.

I was. (whew). Got my problem solved pretty much ok.

I think kola's right about the 'thieves' thing.

We have cell service thru a local provider- Sagebrush Cellular thru Nemont telephone (that have agreements with Mid Rivers and Verizon now)...I sure can't complain about the service...Have a local office and have home rates thru almost all eastern Montana and western N.D....Start hitting roaming rates and tolls when you get to Billings tho..

My son had a Verizon phone for awhile for work- and had nothing but trouble with them...Didn't have the coverage the locals provided- and they always had the billing all screwed up- and some person that couldn't speak English was calling you up.....One called me one day- and I finally got it thru her head he wasn't here and she should call the cell phone number (DUH  )- and she said she couldn't get him on it- so I explained to her that his phone was probably broke again-or in an area with no coverage-- and if their phones/service wasn't such pieces of crap she could reach him..

I, too, have Alltel and am wondering what to do. Verizon bought them and if I understand right, they are required to sell off the Alltel business here. Otherwise, Verizon would be the only provider in the area. As far as I know, we will continue as Alltel until some other company buys the SD Alltel service.

Don't know what all is going on FH.
Was the most talked about thing on the TV here last night.
Some people were so mad they thought they were going to break the windows at the stores. Some were even spitting on the windows. It was getting ugly. Will see what is said tonight.
Can't blame some of the people, they got rid of their land line phones and were using their cells as their primary phone.

I didn't need a big fancy cell phone or want a monthly bill, so I got a Tracfone. Only trouble I have is some dead zones and roaming areas.

Never get rid of a land line phone.

Lots of places can't locate you when you call 911 or the like in an emergency. Here, they can't track back on a 911 call...can't afford the equip they say.

We've got so many hills & hollers that cell service is a crap shoot on a good day anyway!

I've had an unlisted land line for over 30 yrs......AND.....your telephone provider, or at least mine does, can place a block for free that stops all that.

I NEVER get those marketing/political calls.....EVER.

This is one of the things that most irks me in life truth be told. The same idiotic telemarketers call me over and over.
Well my phone provider has'nt stopped the calls, suppose to be a number to call to stop the on going calls. If you wait for the telemarketer to come on and tell them to stop the calls, they seem to get worse :???: Tried pushing "9" to be taken off the list, and i think they put me at the top of the list,Had three different calls the other day within ten minutes of one another.Oh,and another thing that pisses me off.Is anyone else mad that you pay for Serious radio and they have commercials on it now. What the *#@%!!* is that all about.
