We have a rain heading this way from Mississippi. Hope I'm not disappointed this time like the rest.

We haven't had a rain since the first of March. Oops, I take that back, we did get 1/100 about two weeks ago.

Your sudan looks good. I'm bout to get ready to plant some pearl millet. Hope it does as well as yours.

We're building a new pole hay barn right this very minute....so I expect to have'er full of hay, if the weather holds, by next wk.

Seems the pic gallery doesn't like me....it won't let me post any pic of any type. Tells me I've met my limit for the day....I've not posted a pic in about a month or so.

But....being the trooper...I'll give'er another try.!

I plant millet if I plant late,as it only needs 1/2 the moisture this sudan grass does, its gonna be interesting to see how yours does planting it this early with moisture it outa take off,I know it sure makes good feed.................good luck

Lol, we can't plant Milliet or Sudan until June at the earliest.. WE tend to follow hay barley with millet of some sort planted around June 23-July 1st... The millet takes a bit more moisture to get started than sudex but needs less moisture to thrive.. We tend to bale the barley and graze the millet/sudex since that time of year our grass doesn't grow much... We hit the Millet around August 1st and than let it grow back and hit it again with the cows after weaning... Gives them a great kickstart into gaining weight before the good fall grass comes back on strong.

We've had plenty of rain but not enought heat units - - - water water everywhere but we need heat for grass

Haymaker:

Barn is 40x60. The Bermuda is just starting up now. This first cutting is fescue and some Orchard grass and wild grass. It's beeeeautiful stuff for sure. I keep it weed free.

The Bermuda/Sudan will be the next 3 cuttings as I usually get 4 per year. I will only square about 200 or so bales, just enough for my geriatric horse and for use in the barn stalls for sick/ailing critters that might end up in there. All other hay will be round baled.

I usually sale any extra hay to the " horsey" folks who have moved in here and have horses.

Haymaker we have been listening to to you complain about how dry you were all winter then you post pictures like that. Have you ever been to Wyoming or eastern Montana or southern Saskatchewan when it was dry?

Or Central Alberta? We haven't seen hay like that in years :?

Yeah Haymaker. You wouldn't know dry if it bit you in the ear.

Everybody knows that it rains all the time in your part of the country. Here, if we get 16 inches, we've had a normal year. If it comes at the right time, we have a great year. :)

I've been reading a book about the great plains and they say in it, that 16 inches up here is like 22 inches down south , on the southern great plains, because of evaporation. Interesting, veddy interestink.
