Haymaker we have been listening to to you complain about how dry you were all winter then you post pictures like that. Have you ever been to Wyoming or eastern Montana or southern Saskatchewan when it was dry?

Yes I been in Wyoming when it was dry,did alright too,until it turned cold,first blizzard that blew thru,blew me right back to TX,if you are haying in that kinda environment your ground must be more fertile than it is around here,we really have a short rainy period here ,like the ole saying make hay while the sun shines,well around here you better get it planted early so you can captalize on the spring rain storms,because when it's over it,s over :wink: ..................good luck

Haymaker:

Barn is 40x60. The Bermuda is just starting up now. This first cutting is fescue and some Orchard grass and wild grass. It's beeeeautiful stuff for sure. I keep it weed free.

The Bermuda/Sudan will be the next 3 cuttings as I usually get 4 per year. I will only square about 200 or so bales, just enough for my geriatric horse and for use in the barn stalls for sick/ailing critters that might end up in there. All other hay will be round baled.

I usually sale any extra hay to the " horsey" folks who have moved in here and have horses.

Yup,those "horsey" folks do pay good .............good luck

We've had plenty of rain but not enought heat units - - - water water everywhere but we need heat for grass

We got frost last night but it did not freeze - - - hopefully the last frost of the year - - - forcast is good.

If we can just get a little heat ( not hot) the grass will come.

Lol, we can't plant Milliet or Sudan until June at the earliest.. WE tend to follow hay barley with millet of some sort planted around June 23-July 1st... The millet takes a bit more moisture to get started than sudex but needs less moisture to thrive.. We tend to bale the barley and graze the millet/sudex since that time of year our grass doesn't grow much... We hit the Millet around August 1st and than let it grow back and hit it again with the cows after weaning... Gives them a great kickstart into gaining weight before the good fall grass comes back on strong.

Yes IL Rancher,differnt parts of the country call for differnt methods for sure,your growing season is "set back" from ours,but it still all comes down to weather,I always have folks ask me what you gonna plant,when are you gonna sell,when you gonna buy,are you gonna lease ole man's so & so's place this year etc..............my answer is always the same "depends on the weather".................good luck

Yep, weather plays a huge role. Last year I had plans to plant 75 acres down in summer annuals untl it didn't rain more than an inch between may 15th and July 1st on this place. Had rain to the sotuh, west, east and north but not here.. That field stayed fallow for the summer.. No way was I going to put the seed with no moisture to germinate.. Neighbor put some millet in half didn't even germinate and most of what idid died...

Got 2/10 out where the cows are (12 miles from here)

Well they found it,I been watching a few axis does graze these hay fields in the evening,as long as it dont get outa hand ,I wont start shooting,time will tell,no big deal right now,but you get 20 or 30 of these axis grazing and its almost equal to grazing cattle on it,some of them are pretty good sized ..................good luck

Not dumb questions,the one in the picture I would say is medium sized,I have seen some with horns even with their hind quarters,probably show you a picture of one before I get this hay baled.
Yes you can shoot them year round because they are not native game,introduced exotics................good luck

Obviously the meat must be good if their eating that nice hay,in Alberta theres lots of places to hunt deer but the best meat is around our area where the deer eat hay and crops,in Northern Alta they eat Spruce and Pine trees..that meat is nowhere as good! It smells and tastes different.

If they start ruining my hay,you and I just might do it,got all this land leased to hunters and they just love to get those axis,I usually get one small one,and let them shoot the bigger ones,they been doing a fair job of controlling them,but some years they can get outa hand.................good luck

THe smaller ones are usually the better ones for the table
I don't care much for people who are in to shooting animals just for the heck of it
either put it on the table, protect something or leave it alone

Thanks for the compliment T1 Roper,I usta do a lot of hunting,also did quite a bit of quiding fat cats from the big cities when I was a youngster,you cant call what I do now hunting,when deer season starts I stick that ole Ruger in my pickup,and some how before the season is over a big dumb doe volunteers to be sausage, ... if the weather people are right you are gonna get some rain tonite..............good luck
