Heather Mills breaks into pig farm to protest about farrowing crates

Columnist David Richardson reckons Heather Mills is a puppet of the pressure group. Why not read his blog post in full and add your own comments.

The estranged wife of Sir Paul McCartney, Heather Mills, has filmed undercover footage of a pig farm in Somerset as part of a Viva! campaign against farrowing crates.

Ms Mills has revealed that she led a team of campaigners onto the farm in the middle of the night without the permission of the farmer.

The video shows pigs in farrowing crates - which are legal - but which Ms Mills claims are "barbaric and inhumane."

"We're always being told that Britain has the highest welfare standards in the world and this is an example of this being a complete joke," she said.

The farmer - Michael Underhill from Greinton, near Bridgwater, told FW that he is considering taking legal action, although he is having to think carefully about what it might cost.

"I'm annoyed that she's been around the farm and it has unnerved my two children who don't like the idea that someone has been creeeping around in the night," he said.

"If they weren't in farrowing crates, instead of getting 10 pigs per litter [surviving] we would be getting six per litter."

The National Pig Association said the organisation did not debate animal ethics with criminals and did not take part in media stunts that involved 'Viva!'.

"NPA continues to engage in talks with serious animal welfare organisations such as RSPCA and Compassion in World Farming," said a statement on its website.

Viva is a vegetarian campaign group which claims that eating meat causes environmental destruction, damages human health, contributes to global hunger and inflicts suffering on animals across the world.

The woman is a tad loony, she convinced Sir Paul to protest in Canada last year against the seal slaughter, really none of thier business.

I don't know why the police can't charge her with trespassing on this pig farm then it wouldn't cost the farmer legal expences.

maybe a few bear traps scattered around the hoghouse might help keep people from tresspassing in the night??

Probably get them sued if they did that.. And they could loose very easily too, at least in this state.. Pain in the arse..

I don't know why the cops can't just place charges on these people.. What they are doing is not only illegal but dangerous to their own darn health... Farms have a lot of hidden perils and in the dark they can be real darn hard to see.. I would hate to be a farmer that takes a shot at what they thought was a big racoon climbing into a chicken house and find out it is a crazed animal rights person instead... Probably won't happen in England but I know a few folks around here who might take a shot.

If I was the farmer, I'd sue the living tar out of her. The way diseases have been spreading she could cost the farmer a lot of money if she had been to more than just his farm. Why can't they get her for trespassing, breaking and entering. I wish she would have fallen into a pile of doo doo!!!

I put this on another thread, but will put it here also.

Though I greatly appreciate your contributions to the discussion, is there any chance you could get a new avitar? Kolanuraven had it first, and we old-time "regulars" are quite used to her slightly left-of-center comments being associated with the heart-shaped sunglassed bespeckled moo cow. :-)

Yup, it's a good way to tell the conservatives from the lib's. Lib's are always trying to confuse and hide under different identity's.
