Another Plant and some other pictures

Another plant that I took pictures of the other day. I am pretty sure I know what it is, but after looking into it, I am a little unsure. Is it a good or bad plant as I see there is some good sized patches growing in the south pasture.

Found this peeker while checking the bulls the other day. Usually they are pretty shy.

To me, that plant looks like it might be wild licorice. I believe it is a legume. Does its seed form in burr like pods. It usually grows where moistue is more abundant, often in wallows, it is thought bufffalo carried these burs from place to place. It is grazed some in the early stages but seldom when more mature. The American Indian used this plant some for food and medicine. Roots were chewed for toothache, or roasted for food. The botanical name for wild licorice is Gilycyrrhiza lepidota. Gilycyrrhiza meant sweet root while lepidota refers to it's scales or black dots on the leaves.

We get that licorice burr growing in areas that maybe aren't as damp as where you have it cause it doesn't seem to get as big.

Great pictures! Looks like the bulls are fat and sassy! Be sure and remember that Badger hole if your ever a horseback and shifting gears! They are hard on legs and your pride when ya go flying over the dash! :wink:

It looks like what we call buck brush. It will grow from just a few plants to a whole patch if not stopped. Rotary mowing will help, pasture burning will help and spraying will help but It's doggone hard to get rid of.

What we call buck brush is mostly Western Snowberry.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Clarence you called it the way I remembered it. I have always called it American Licorice from my FFA range judging days. I have always thought it was a nitrogen fixer too, but the sites I looked up the other day didn't mention it. It does seem to like the very best ground. I guess my memory isn't going.

I am sure that it isn't buckbrush either. This plant gets a cockle bur type seed on it as in picture 1. I think their is a patch of that in this pasture too.
