I've got another question. Last spring I bought a two year old angus bull. I had bough two more bulls from the same folks in the past and they are both pretty good bulls. Anyhow, this latest bull was filling out fine and seemed to be doing his job, all was well. But yesterday I saw this big ol coming three bull hunched down under some poor ol cow stealing milk. I realize it's probably been happening all along and I just never caught him at it till now. Is this a problem? I kinda feel like it is, as he is stealing milk that should be going to the calf. How should I make him stop? I've seen young heifers steal milk before and teach the whole bunch to steal. Should I be worried about him teaching others to steal? I realize this might be a silly question but I sure don't know what to do other than replace him.
 
Get rid of that piece of crap. Yesterday would be good. :mad: If they weren't worth so much right now, I'd be tempted to shoot the sucker. I have no tolerance for cattle that suck each other.
 
Just put a plastic blab in his nose. We have several cows with blabs in their noses, and it seems to be a worthwhile remedy. When the sucker goes after the suckee, the blab hurts the one with the milk. They either kick or move away, and the problem eventually solves itself.

If he is a good bull and you need him I would try this - - - easy to do and will normally work well.
 
Are you talking one of those nose flap weaning things? I've never used them, but that sounds like a good idea. I might have to try to make my own, because there is 90 miles of icy highway between me and town.
 
We have used a bull nose ring a couple of times with replacement heifers who pulled this stunt. They hadn't been at it long, though, being just turned back out with cows. The habit wasn't really established. In the fall they had forgotten and we took the ring out.
 
They are called weaners or no suks, nasco catalogue has them and they will work. Like the plastic ones in case of getting caught on something. Can make one with a nose ring and a little barb wire or the kant slip removable nose rings the show people used years ago.
