Any Gelbvieh breeders?

I recommended my best bull customer to a Gelbvieh breeder because they were looking for a bull for their red and tan cows. :?

Perhaps I'm speaking out of turn, but I don't believe it was just Gelbvieh breeders HD was talking about....it would seem to me that the consensus on Ranchers is that ALL PB breeders are crooks, don't know how to feed cattle or raise them right, and are liars, thieves and general downright scum......it makes it a little difficult to join in a conversation or post pictures on here somedays.....

Or your too liberal. Or your homeraised bull is garbage. Or your just a hobby rancher and not worthy of this site. Or my genetics are far superior to the rest of the planet. Or the way you feed, calve,hay,breathe,ect...... is different than me so therefore it's wrong! :roll: Gets old! :mad: As far as the stuff about purebred outfits, I'd say thats about right! :shock: :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :wink: Just the Idaho bunch! :wink:

If you are having trouble buying good bulls in the year 2010, maybe the problem isnt who you are buying the bull from! Maybe it's the guy writing the check! With all the information and research and ease of getting it, in this day and age, there is absolutely no excuse to not find what you need somewhere! Even dumb Angus folks like me can do it! :wink:

I know I've only been here for a couple of years and maybe a little thick but I think I've missed most of those conversations. I and many like me just like looking at cattle of all stripes. Some ask for critique and some are brutally honest when replying. I am not a PB guy and it don't for sure know who is. Most of what I have seen here is good natured but when it isn't surely the aggrieved PB breeder needs to grow some thicker hide. As a side note Gelbvieh's are intriguing enough for me to go see some in person and I am going to avoid Grassfarmer for a while otherwise a few of his Luings might make my bull pen. :-)

Yep, I'm all for thicker hides - that's what I think Angus are inferior to L.... oops, sorry didn't mean to go there :oops: :wink: :D If some of the PB folks on here feel they are being picked on maybe they should step up and argue the case for their breed/method of rearing/ethics - that's how discussions are meant to work isn't it - input from both sides?
 
Not all Pb breeders are but quite a few aren't the paragons of virtue that their four colour glossy adds potray-how about enough of the pity party-another good thread highjack-the poor man wanted to know about Gelbvieh's in Kansas for crying out loud.
 
I just recieved the 2010 Genex bull book and I could not find any Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls listed. I checked back to my 2009 Genex book and there were not any Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls in it either.
They do have RC and Shortstop on the ABR price list and on the computer.

BTW our local Gelbvieh breeder told me mention he has a pen of 3 year old virgin Gelbvieh bulls for sale he would like to move before they are 4 year olds. Their Ranch wants to spend more time with there meat goat operation.

I just got my semex catalog there are a couple of pages ,,,bull barn has alot more. GV is on the rise not the decline... Heterosis is the key and without that there will not be the 3way producers or the purebred producers.

Which BTW I gave my hugest (not a real word) apology to NR..
I was wearing my glasses for astigmatism , but if I wear them at close range I become somewhat dyslexic..

H, I do not bash any breed, you will see that as you get to know me,as I have complimented you on your cattle.. Good cattle are good cattle no matter the breed. Just like Holstein is not the GOD of milk breeds, but I still love love the breed.

Now, if you want to speak goats I will let my good Aussie friend Keren take that over.. :P

I bought 20 head of Gelbvieh x cows a year ago. Some black, some red. If they are all like these ones I would like more of them. The only problem I see in the breed is some of them are quite narrow. Has anyone else noticed that the red continentals ( Gelbvieh, Limosin and Saler ) are either real good or darn poor with not many in the middle? This has been my observation for a long while in the ones I see over here.

Even though I really can't afford the time this am, I just had to ;-)
Had to learn how to paste a pic first though.
Our Gelbvieh Futurity Bull that we won with at Farm Fair this fall. Quite thick. We are Gelbvieh seedstock producers, and we are quite proud of the thickness and easy fleshing ability of our animals. plus for old tagers like me, the docility of our animals.
Leader for our 4-H club, so it is public speaking today.....so you are saved from further "spewings" of Gelbvieh qualities for now .................

Should maybe resist the temptation to comment but as far as I'm concerned when you take a breed and cross it with something in fashion (usually Angus B. or R.) to become more acceptable to the in crowd your are cutting your breeds throat. If you make them like Angus why does anybody need them? - there's plenty Angus around for everybody already. I believe Gelbvieh were a good breed with distinct characteristics but they are yellow cattle - that is what the name means for goodness sake. These black and red things are not Gelbvieh any more than solid red or black, polled, Simmentals, Maines, Salers, Limos or any of the other mainland europe "exotics". If this continues we may as well just abolish breeds and call them red or black cattle and sort them on their EPDs :roll:

I agree GF, there is a need to maintain the integrity of any breed. However, I also appreciate breeders making Balancers available as well since it's a pretty easy way for me to keep the Gelbvieh influence down to a minimum in my cows. I prefer to keep them around 1/4 Gelbvieh, the feedlot people I've dealt with seem to like the calves that way too FWIW :D .
