Popped milo? A couple years ago, at a WBR they had a rep there that was pushing "Scamper's Choice" horse feed. It had popped milo in it. Supposed to be really easy for horses to digest as well as very good for them.

I just found out that "Scamper's Choice" has been discontinued. (I haven't fed it.....but only because it was never available in my area) I was just curious if anyone has fed it to cattle or horses either one. Was thinkin about maybe buyin a bag and poppin it to see if the horses would like it. Just adding it to their diet...not as a complete feed.

an Interesting note:

I rode pens for Charlie James- Charmayne's dad- back in the 80's
they fed popped milo as part of the ration at the feed yard- they had some kind of set up to pop it at the mill.
and now there is Scampers choice?? ( scamper as in the horse Charmayne won the world on 9-10 times)
there has to be a connection.

I rode pens so I don't have any clue as to the feed value.

I´ve not considered popping any of the grain sorghum (milo) that we produced at the ranch, but will give it a try. I imagine that much like kernels of corn, simply applying plenty of heat will get the job done.

Yes Scamper's choice as in Charmaynes horse Scamper. The feed has been discontinued ( just heard that today ) So I don't know if it's bein reformulated or what. I think the biggest cause for not having high sales was because it just wasn't available to all the women wantin to use it on their horses. Gore Brothers was making it then it went to another company. (can't remember the name) I tried the feed myself. Haha the lady at the booth thought I was nuts. After they pop it..then it's rolled to flatten it back out so that they can fit what needed to fit into a feedsack. It resembled a sweet feed.

Whitewing....from what reading I've done...you have a better pop rate if the milo is soaked before popping. The more moisture content the better pop rate.
