Besides me? Wow. Everything was given an autogenous pinkeye shot, Long Range wormer shot and a fly tag but none of that seems to mean much right now. Sure appreciate my dart rifle but the calves not so much. Even the older cows can't fight this off.

I'm sure you have a free-choice mineral out for them and didn't just rely on the long-range de-wormer. The free-choice mineral won't stop pinkeye but it will really help the immune system fight off this type of thing. Important to keep it out at all times--just a reminder.

Are you aware that pink eye can be from IBR? Years ago, like 28...., we had a bad outbreak of pinkeye and it was thought at that time
that it was caused by IBR.

Sorry you are having this problem. Darn it! Good luck.

I have a medicated mineral out. Their consumption has been fairly steady at about 125-150 lbs every 10 days or so. 68 pairs. I've added some extra CTC and put out sulfur blocks. Today, I added extra iodine to the mineral. We've had a lot of rain this summer, the grass is tall and everyone seems to be having problems. Misery loves company! There is some research on feeding Vitamin C to boost the immune system and am going to try that as opposed to Draxxin and darts and CTC and $$$$$.

Yea. Tall grass is especially worrisome for pinkeye. It irritates the eyes, makes them water and the face flies go to them.

Faster horses makes a good mineral call. If I get to see a pinkeye problem, I like to roundup and spray everything and treat any infected cattle. I use a mister blower on a hay bed to spray flies, but for a serious fly and pinkeye issue I like to roundup and really douse them.

They are eating right at 3.5 oz. That is target with our mineral. Iodine won't do much, if anything, so I wouldn't mix it in the mineral if it were me. I hope you get some relief. The CTC should help, but you need to give it some time. I don't know much about sulfer, but be careful adding that. It can do more harm than good; hard on kidneys. I doubt they are getting enough to do damage, but do be careful. Mineral is an exact science and mixing this and that in the field isn't always good, even though our intentions are. :D

I'd do what Brad S does...that would probably be the fastest way of stopping it. Cylence is a very good product and is relatively inexpensive. I like the applicator. You can use it without running the cows through the chute.

Again, good luck.

UUUGGGGGHHHHH. We had it bad 4 and 5 summers ago nothing we did seamed to help. Funny thing it came about the first and last time I vaccinated with a pinkeye shot.

I had what some thought was pinkeye in a group of yearling . I think it was more ibr or something along those lines. Treated 50 of 100. Might have 5-10 other cases spread out of a few hundred head. Sure is a pain.

I talked with my veterinarian this afternoon. He says pinkeye is really bad (in this area) this year. I asked if he offered financing on Draxxin. He didn't seem to find any humor in my comment. Mostly, it's tough to find an antibiotic that is concentrated and fluid enough to use with a dart rifle. Draxxin fits well with 1.1ml to 100lbs. Zactran is 2ml to 100lbs. Nuflor is 6ml to 100lbs.

Nuflour has been the most effective for us this year. We did everything "Right" but a few things late, lol... We use the following tools~

IBR vaccine
Pinkeye vaccine
Fly tags
longrange
CHS Ultimin 12:6 with IGR
Dust bags

Started giving Endovac (Salmonella) vaccine. Vet recommended trying this as it is gram negative I believe? Anyways the long and short is by boosting the immune system for gram negative, you seem to get an inadvertent additional boost for pink eye.

And round them up and use Cylence if we see issues. We were late on the fly bags and fly tags this year. So, we got the fly bags out, and used silence as well. That got it pretty well in hand until we were able to run them in and give fly tags. It was just a bad spring/earl summer according to the vet.

Today, I was reading an article in Progressive Cattleman that really surprised me. Did you know that, right now in the U.S., CTC is not labeled for pink eye or foot rot? So adding it a mineral or feed as a preventative or control of foot rot and/or pinkeye is illegal. Once the VFD goes into effect, any Veterinarian who issues a VFD for CTC for the above reason can and probably will lose his/her license.

My vet thinks pink eye should be about to run it's course around here. I sure as L hope he's right.

What do you bet the government takes care of us (sarcasm) and there will be a script for it. It is cleared for many other
things and definitely help avoid a lot of other problems.

It takes a lot of time and money to get things cleared through the EPA. For instance, there is a really good product for leafy spurge control that is waiting on approval.

I treated some yesterday with a new treatment. I sprayed PB blaster in the bad eyes. I've been told it works well, time will tell.

That's about like the old guys who split a cows tail and poured salt in it to cure cows of the "Hollowtail".

I know a lot of guy's that swear by WD-40 for pink eye. I've never tried it, we had pink eye really bad 10 years ago, tried everything and had several cow's that the vet sewed both eyes shut on . The only thing that took care of it quick was Exceede and that's my go to vaccine now.

Around here I feed mineral and trace mineralized salt with added selenium haven't had a case of pinkeye in 3 years and have treated nothing in that same period. Have had a few cows one or two with a sore foot but I just let them be and it was fine most were just sprains in my opinion. When we had our pinkeye outbreak it lasted 3 years thru the cows then the calves then the fall calves then back thru the new calves it was a son of a gun it would keep on right thru winter here. I finally gave up and ignored it as no matter what I tried it didn't work.
