kinda hard to knock paints after lookin at these..............
Darn it Hooks :? Now I'm gonna have to harrass greg...I've been wanting to visit this place....they have some beautys.I haven't seen S.S.A.P around lately

Geez Mrs. Greg sorry if I got a family squabble started :???:

I've never been there myself; a friend of mine in Harve,MT area sent me the 'site address. He knows I like workin horses with chrome & figured they had about as much flash as yall could get on one.

And Judith, I just figured out how use that member list button so now I know... (smacks himself in the forehead again).....

There is good and bad in all breeds. I like my QH's, but there are some QH bloodlines and even some horses with the bloodlines I do like that I wouldn't touch.
I find with Paints (in Canada anyways, maybe US too) there was (and probably still is) breeders that would breed for the all mighty colour only. As long as it was Homozygous breed it because everyone and their dog wanted a 'painted pony' :x  . They couldn't care less what the disposition or conformation was like as long as it had colour  . Unfortunately that pretty much ruined the breed in my opinion and the effects of that are still strong in Canada (maybe US too).
Yes Paints have QH and TB breeding, but whenever I looked at a set of Paint papers its not often that I recognize much of the breeding on them and I study a lot of the QH lines.
Another thing that ticks me off is the Paint Assn' rules. If most 'paints' are of QH/TB bloodlines then why does it cost $75.00 (or probably more now) to 'enroll' a QH/TB stallion into the "Paint ash'n" so their foals can be registered? I think thats a bunch of crap  . If it wasn't for the QH/TB's there wouldn't be a Paint breed  .
I've been approached several times from Paint people that wanted to breed their paint mares to my QH stud and I refuse because they wouldn't be able to get papers on the foal , but I always tell them if they wanted to breed their mares then they would have to pay for my stallion's enrollment fee into the Paint Assn' and I assume I would also have to be a "member" of the Paint assn'
As for Appy's .... I had one once, and well.... thats all I have to say about that   , but there is good and bad in all breeds.

Hooks, teasin you...greg and I have talked alot obout visiting Don and Connies place,we've both talked to Connie, shes a real nice lady, and those Paints are beautiful :!: :!:

Jigger, paint breeders breed for colour because they are a COLOUR breed,if we wanted plain coloured horses most would prob.stay with the quarter horse....you need to look into Paint papers better, theres alot of great quarter horse breeding in the background of paints...I'll let Judith argue the TB part, that I don't know as much about. :)

You really want me to mess with your heads look at this!

All TB came from 4 stallions that were dare I say it purebred ARABIANS!!!!!

Quarter horses are primarily TB that were bred to be "quarter milers" (then there was local ponies mixed in there to form the official "American Quarter Horse" as a breed.

Paints are Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds that are painted.

Pinto is a color and is any other "breed" that has been painted.

SOOOOOO All of you quarter horse people that hate arabians have been riding arabians all along the way I see it :D SO it makes me smile just a little bit every day :) Aint life grand!

Interesting info. Judith. gregs always liked Arabs...his first horse was one,so the soft spots still there. I like your Paint explination, the truth...thats why greg and I feel a registered Paint should have colour, the reason for the breed.

We're not breed snobs, all breeds have thier pluses and minuses...I'd love a coloured Walker,I believe Nicky raises them and the nicest riding horse I was ever on was a Walker...greg says an Arab has the biggest heart there is for a breed, never give up...we've harrassed Gregs bro. about Appys soooo much,i have to dig deep to find something good in them  Actually because the Appys breeding more to quarter horse,is getting rid of the Appy tail and head of the old breed.I love my Morgan mare, she drives our sliegh in the winter and the herd in the summer  Some of the best horses in the world are unregistered horse, yup I said it UNREGISTERED  My daughter rides a grade that I trust with her immensly, gregs one greatest horse in his life was a grade that earned the right to die and be buried on our place and is still mourned by the family five years later.

Well I got that off my chest...tee-hee

I think I have things covered. While I do have papered QH and Paints, my favorite saddle horses over the years have been a heinz 57 mix of Arab, Standardbred, Morgan, and Thoroughbred.
On a different note, one article I read a few years ago, written by a retired multi-breed horse show judge, said the appaloosa as a breed, was gone, and that was a good thing! He said they are now a QH with spots, and that had done much to improve the 'breed'. I have never been an app fan. Love Paint spots, can't stand app spots.

I raise TB, but agree with greg on the Arabs. All of my competative trail horses have been arab or arab/morgans. We all know I am a Morgan freak so I am terribly biased :)

If you added in a little Percheron, Shire, Indian/range horses, and several other breeds- you would actually be where the original Quarter Horses evolved from-- all chosen by size, build, and ability characteristics....

Okay, okay! I might as well jump in and help stir it up! :D

Right now, I am breeding QH and went strongly to the bloodlines that are high up or popular in the cutting, working cowhorse, as that is what I want. I may have trouble with the size on some of these little rascals, but all that said, I've been around good ones that wqere all different kinds.

But when you get to braggin on breeds, I will tell you the same thing as I tell the people who think mules are the be all end all. Show me a mule, paint, appy, morgan, etc. that is winning consistently in the cutting pen and I'll sure take a look.

Tendencies, people, tendencies.

Ever heard of Peppy San, Doc Bar, Smart Little Lena, etc..

I've never heard of any in any other breed that cosistently beat them. but I donj't get around a lot so there sure could be some.

Cowy'est horse I've ever ridden is a son of Mr. Bartender. Paint breeding stock. Problem is there was a paint Mr. Bartender and a QH Mr. Bartender and I lost the papers that came with him somehow. So I have no idea which one he came out of, but I suspect the QH one as I think I remember his mother was a paint.

But I did get some of his bloodline going in my herd. Only problem is, they are grade to everybody but me. Doesn't really matter cuz I ain't keeping them in my herd to sell them. I want to ride them. Got a grandson and granddaughter out of the Bartender horse and I love riding the gelding and sure am liking the looks of the colts out of the mare. I'll let you know how they turn out in another year or two when we get to riding some.

Okay, all who I offended, let 'er blast!

"A good horse is never a bad color." Or breed, for that matter.

I'll show you sexy!!! Look at this beast!

For my .02 $ worth, I gotta say I'm not a big Quarterhorse fan. There I said it. A cross maybe. I've rode and seen Arabs with a ton of cowsense. Right now I've got a half tennessee walker that money can't buy. He loves doing anything with cattle, and has taught my kids alot about moving them. When the mood strikes him, he'll get into this running walk and can really cover the miles. We also use him at the odd teampenning or roping. He's nothing to look at but he's real solid built and can put in a lot of hard miles day after day. This is my biggest knock against the quarterhorse. In my opinion, they're too heavily muscled and not long muscled like other breeds. I guess that's why there is so many breeds. I like them long muscled and rangy built . This type can cover 20-30 miles(not walking or trotting) a day every day and not break down. If you luck out and they have some cow in them you have a real good dependable horse for years.

Uh,, hello? He's not a bay or a dun. :???: So how can he be sexy? :???:

Hmm, some people just have no or at least very little, taste. Ahem. (snooty emoticon here)

Take the color off and just look at that bum!!!! His barrel is pretty darn tootin great too :)

How about Color Me Smart, JB? He was consistant enough to win a couple million in the cutting pen. Not too shabby, I'd say.

Nope, never heard of him. Or was it a her?

And yes, not too shabby.

Another point, we need to raise what people want to buy if we are raising them to sell. I am not. I am raising them to ride. And Paints ain't too popular around here, unless they are really colored up. What are the odds of raising that kind, every time?

I've watched them give too many away, to want to raise them.

I bought this one cheap and think he will do alright. I will buy one to resell or take a chance I will like him, but I ain't going to raise them. Way this horse deal is, I may not raise too many other ones either. After this fall.

It would tickle me to no end to see an App, Morgan, or better yet, an Arb, win the world and beat all them QH's. But so far, it ain't happened real often.
