This morning when we started our F-350 up it ran for a bit then started laying white smoke out the exhaust when ya stepped on the accelorater. I jumped out and checked the exhaust pipe and their was antifreeze even dripping out of the pipe. (its a diesel but thank golly its still on Warranty) Must have a cracked head/block/ or a blown head gasket. Ford dealership came out and picked her up and took her back to town. Guess we will find out next week how much damage is done. Its only got around 35,000 miles on it since we got it new in May 2004. Guess their wont be any cows going to pasture for a few days til we get it back. Darn Fords!! Gonna have to get me a Hyundai for pulling the gooseneck.....  :? :???:

determination.........if it works for elk, maybe just maybe it would work for hauling cattle

Make them give you a loaner. Only 34,000 miles, and its not like the 1ton diesel is the pooch of their lineup. It won't hurt them to loan you a demo, and it may soothe your freyed nerves. What the hell, if you can stand to have your ride down for a week, you may as well save money and drive an old bucket.

I have heard there are lots of problems with the 6.0 Ford Diesel
engine. Any truth to that? We have a friend that is afraid to buy one
because they told him at the dealership (Ford and Dodge dealership)
they would rather sell him a Dodge because of all the problems Ford is having with the 6.0. I thought the 6.0 was new in '05.

I thought the 6.0 was a new engine. This place says they work on
10 Fords to 1 Dodge.

Have hears similiar thigns about Fords new engine.. I don't know which one it is I was just told by a a friend who works at a diesel shop that they were seeing a lot of the new Fords... But he likes to talk and I seem to remember him saying the same about Duramaxes too. .. We were going to be a ford anyways but the dealer couldn't get one in for 6 weeks or soemthing like that (End of model year during that dealer pricing thing). And the FIL wouldn't buy a dodge if it was the last vehicle onn Earth since his budy has had 4 disintigrate in front of him.... So a Chevy it is... Oh well, haven;t had any problems with it yet...

A friend in Texas had an 05 Ford with the 6 litre diesel...it kept stalling out and stranding him in traffic. He kept it a year had it "fixed" at least 6 times before he sold it and went back to a gas engine.

Another friend works for GM as a service adviser. His experience in the biz is that Ford has huge injector system troubles in that new diesel.

I asked about the Duramax, the engine is bulletproof, but at about 300,000 km (180,000 miles) they have injection issues as well. Cost $4-7000 to replace. GM is only replacing the ones that have a low system pressure on a specific test. Not all that fail have that.

My old Chevs are getting tired. I run 6.5's. The '93 is down and I have plans to put the 5.9 cummins into it this summer. My "spare" that I have been running over a year as my main hauler is close to that 300,000 km mark and makes me a bit nervous to be the main hauler.

The main problem in the 6.0 was the injectors. That was mainly a problem on the first ones, they have since fixed most of the problems with the motor. The 6.0 is not as good of a pulling motor as the old 7.3.

I have a 7.3 in a F-250 that will pull circles around my neighbors 6.0 F-350.
Did it just last weekend when we had to take cattle to a sale about 200 miles from here. Every time we got to a hill I had to back off and wait for him.

Used less fuel too.

FH, the 6.0L was riddled with issues when first introduced. Brain fart time, but I believe it was MY2003. Mostly injector issues (leaking seals on the hydraulic injectors allowed diesel fuel into the oil supply. In worst case scenario, it would lead to crankshaft breaking), however they also had many issues with ECM programming.

Most of the ECM issues have been resolved, however the injector issues still crop up from time, even with the latest changeup. The hydraulic fired injectors never worked all that well for the 7.3, and why they decided to pump even more pressure into one I'll never understand. I believe the new Navistar diesel is using a Siemens piezo electric system, similar to the Bosch system in use on the Cummins and the D-Max.

The Duramax is a decent engine. Able to pull stronger than the 6.0L, but it still has injector issues from using dissimilar metals in the head, block and injector bodies.

The Cummins is still the workhorse of the diesels. The new common rails are harder on fuel than their predecessors, but if you can find a 1994 - 2002 with either the 12 valve or VP44 equipped 24 valve, you've got a truck that is second to no light truck for pulling.

Yes!
The Ford Diesel forums (theDieselStop.com for example) are full of pain and complaints about the 6.0
You're right DiamondS in that they were introduced in '03. The first two years seem to be the most problematic, which is true of anything new it would seem, but I don't remember the original 7.3PSD having this many issues....

I had a 2003 F-250 Super Duty and the injectors went on it. Was acting just like fuel filters plugging. I was in a hurry to get home and was really stomping on her when everything came to an abrupt end motor siezed solid so we thought. Would not turn over. The next morning I drained the oil pan and I got over 70 litres of oil and diesel fuel out of there. Then fille dit with new oil and it started but they had to totally redo the engine. Ford pretty much took it back and traded us for this 2004 F-350 we have now.

My mom has a 2002 Dodge with that 24 valve cummins and its one gutless wonder. It kinda turned me off of Dodges. Ive talked to lots of people who like their Dodges though, but Im a Ford man

We WERE Ford people for years; felt like a traitor with our first Dodge.
Now we are on our third one and haven't been one bit sorry we
switched.

I wouldn't try to convince anyone about vehicles. To each his own...and it's kind of personal, like religion.

Mr. FH's family used to drive Internationals. My family drove Fords.
At one Christmas get together, dad drove his Ford into the ranch with
all the International pickups. When he got inside he said to everyone,
"I'm sure glad my Ford made it into this International country!"

I'd suspect something up with the truck then. One fairly common issue was the intercooler tanks cracking. This will reduce your pulling power. Another common issue (the most common, and an ongoing sore spot with Dodge owners) is a bad lift pump. This will lead to power reduction and a heavy hit to fuel economy. I'd have her check it out, as that 2002 should pull the butt off pretty much anything on the road. I personally think they were better than the new ones.

Thanks for your good advice, Diamond S. Nice to have someone
with some knowledge here that can simplify things or let us know
what to check out.

This is our third Dodge Dually Cummins 4x4. The first was a 1997;

then a 2002 Dodge that we traded it for a 2006; and I don't know if Mr.
FH would agree with you on the pulling power. One thing tho, the
2002 had a higher geared rear end than the 2006 and we learned
a long time ago that really makes a difference. So far the 2006 is
right with the 2002 as far as fuel mileage. They did tell us at the
dealership it might not be as good. Sad thing is, though, our 1997 got
as high as 21 mpg. empty. Guess that's progress...

We need Katrina to post a picture of her BIG RIG. It's pretty awesome!
