Auburn lands prize lineman from Arkansas

By Jay G. Tate
Montgomery Advertiser

Arkansas' football program has been enveloped by turmoil during the past month.

Auburn made things worse Friday.

Offensive lineman Lee Ziemba, a top prospect from Rogers, Ark., announced plans to play at Auburn next season. By committing to the Tigers, Ziemba jilted a program that had wooed him for years from a few miles down the road.

"It wasn't just one thing, it wasn't two things, it was just an overall decision," Ziemba said at a morning news conference. 'There's not one tangible thing that made my choice. They discussed (my role), and I will have an opportunity to play early there. Of course, I have a lot of hard work ahead of me."

Landing Ziemba (6-7, 295) was a top priority for the Tigers, who desperately need an impact blocker at right tackle. Jonathan Palmer started all 13 games this season but won't be back in 2007.

His backup, rising senior Leon Hart, has made only a handful of starts during his college career. Ziemba indicated Friday that Auburn coaches plan to give him a chance to earn a starting job out of two-a-days, though first-year linemen rarely thrive in the Southeastern Conference.

Ziemba grew up 20 miles north of the Arkansas campus. When he narrowed his college suitors to the Tigers and Razorbacks last month, many believed Arkansas had the inside track.

Things have changed since then.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, highly regarded quarterback Mitch Mustain and wideout Damian Williams all have elected to leave the school.

Still, Ziemba said Friday that he wasn't totally dissuaded by the problems.

"I think the problems at Arkansas had a little effect on Ziemba's decision, but I really think it came down to where he felt most comfortable," said AuburnSports.com senior editor Bryan Matthews. "That's what he stressed throughout the recruiting process."

College coaches cannot comment on players until they sign binding letters-of-intent. National Signing Day is Feb. 7.

Ya think? And have to sit out a year? Not a chance.

Seriously, he'll probably start next year. Coach says he's that mature.

Yeah right, coach says my ash.... What else would he say? He'll pee his pants when he sees those black shirt huskers......

The Huskers were the ones doing the peeing this year girl.

Do I need to give you the score in the Cotton Bowl again? By the way, where did the Huskers finish in the final poll?

Or are you gonna cite "Tradition"?

Guess what? We got the number one high school running back in the nation this year too. A kid from Florida. Just heard that a few minutes ago.

Dang, since I can't say for years we played walk ons and won cause that would be tradition.....Opppps already said it!!!! :D :D All I can say is that at least it's not florida or Oklahoma.....

I see what you mean now.

It's so hard for the "Has Beens" to turn loose of the old times Jigs.

Wonder if the folks at "Yale" still talk about having more National Championships than any one else?

nothing hurts a husker more than a once perennial doormat stepping up and whoopin them. I enjoy like hell, harassing the coonhumpers about their team.

don't get me wrong, I love to watch a good ball game, and I think watching the old huskers, (turner gill and tom rathbun era teams) is some of the best ball you will see, but I will be damned if I will watch it near a husker.

when KSU beat OU in the title game,me in right before kickoff. start yammering about how NU is a better team, KSU did not deserve to play this game, tradition, consecutive sell out, and lawrence Phillips was a good guy... then OU runs in for a fast TD. all we heard was the glory days of the big 8...NU vs OU, game of the century.

but when we went on a rush, and pop off for a 35 - 7 win. the husker fans tell us how it must be rigged, no way KSU could do it on their own.....

typical big Red....classy fans my ash!

(present company excluded , of course)

Mike, "It's so hard for the "Has Beens" to turn loose of the old times Jigs."

What, two guys picking on a woman?

That "has beens" talk sounds like it comes from some "never beens"

I have a bit more positive view. while NU is a "has been" KSU is not a "never been" but a "gonna be"

is it September yet?????

Sandhusker, Jigs and Mike are lots of fun to tease and I know they don't mean a thing other than giving me a hard time which I deserve... Mike is a true southern gentleman and jigs has a heart the size of Texas, so I'm honored if they give me shirt....

Go Huskers!!!!

I really enjoy your smart ash comebacks. maybe this fall , if it work out, I can get you and Roscoe to come down to Manhattan for the Husker game.....my treat, unless Nebraska wins....then your happy ash is walking home!
