My cowgirl crew. The Kosmo Kid couldn't be with us today, because he was serving as official judge for the chicken show
at the Bennett County Fair. :-)

Young horse breaker in action. His dad is doing some block work on our ranch, so I hired this young aspiring cowboy to put some time
on the grandkids' new pony. He knows what he is doing, and is a fine young man.

Soapweed I have a ? about the bulls. Do you sell all your bulls every year or if not about what percentage, and do you ever use home bred and raised bulls? How did those funny red ones do for you? Did they hold up?
As usual your cattle, family and pics look great. Thanks for sharing.

I saw the Kosmo Kid aka Chicken Man yesterday. He was very humble, never bragged once that he was the official poultry expert. It was an honor to shake his hand. Seriously he was much appreciated for volunteering his time and "expertise."

He is in pretty elite company because there is probably not many of us here on ranchers qualified to judge chickens, :)

Unless it was a taste test.

I also ran into the Kosmo (Chicken Man) at the Bennett County Fair. We had a good visit about his background in the chicken business. He seems to have about as much experience at chicken's, as our current Commander in Chief had in running a country when he got elected the first time. Thankfully Kosmo couldn't do as much damage as the other guy  :x Actually, it's the first time I had the pleasure of visiting with Kosmo. Very impressive young man Soap. You should be proud, and that grandboy of your's could win any cute kid contest I know !!!

We will be selling most of our bulls this fall. With hay at $200 per ton, and a bull eating at least 30 pounds of hay per day, keeping them over for the nine months they are not needed will cost approximately $800. I don't have so much invested in our bull battery per head that we can't just pull the plug and sell them for weigh-up prices, and take a chance on reinvesting come next spring. My bull buying theory is to buy high quality bulls in quantity lots with a good discount for volume. Registration papers aren't necessay, or even expected. Insurance never comes with these deals, but I can "self insure" and get along fine.

We did use the Hereford bulls on two-year-old cows that had their first calf this past spring. These bulls will be sold this fall, and we will see how their calves turned out before trying the experiment again. Several Angus bulls were turned with these cows after the first two weeks, so we will be able to see which calves were sired by which bulls by the color of their faces.

I agree with you on all accounts, river rat. Thanks for the comments.
