Seems after labor day most schools are in session. Reminds me of my grade school days.

I was fortunate enough to attend a country school for all of my grade school years. There were only 2 in my grade thru out the 8 years, but we shared the one room school with as many as 10 others.

Lunch consisted of a sandwich, a candy bar and usually a fruit. Later in the wintertime we would wrap hot dogs in aluminum foil and put them on the propane stove which heated the one room school. By lunchtime we enjoyed a hot cooked meal.

Our water to wash and drink was from local dams, or stock ponds. We hauled water to a buried cistern with a large tank and then hand pumped out of the cistern.

Outdoor biffs were our restrooms. One for the girls and one for the boys. Indoor plumbing was non exsistent. Usually we had a kettle on the stove full of water, warm water, for washing before lunch.

Communications were 2-way radio's. Old Viking Messangers with a mike. Our channel was 13. Telephones hadn't reached our area yet. Mail was recieved at the local post office 20 miles away, and roads were dirt
as they hadn't been graveled and improved yet.

We had a group called YCL, so everyone had a job to do. Some pounded erasers, some swept floors, filling the water cooler was the toughest one in the winter, and the best job was putting up and taking down the flag and folding it. We all rotated jobs thru out the year so everyone had their turn.

Still we never missed any school unless there was a blizzard, because the teacher lived at school in a small room, we called the teacher-eetch. Tranporting to and from school was done by vehicle, bike, horseback, team or foot. And of course it was all uphill both ways to and from school.

Just wondering if there's anyone out there that went to country school also, and had a story to tell. Not many of us old foggies left that got that great experience. Times sure have changed around here since way back then...... in the 70's.
