Was over at a friend's helping himdo some stuff-he went out to feed some heifers. A mare came up along the stud pen-he struck at her and snapped his leg right between the fetlock and the knee. we had to shoot him-a real nice Dun -I think he was a Leo grandson or greatgrandson. It just happened in the blink of an eye.
 
My fourwheeler has yet to do that. Granted I can't rope big calf off of it but i have tagged 20 "overzealous" cows calves from the pickup and given them their tag and 7 way shot and have never had a cow I couldn't get in with the 4 wheeler. Horses have their place on ruff terain and rodeos.
 
Work Hard and Study Hard,, I do most of my cowboying on a 4 wheeler now, too much country to cover with a horse in a day. The horses are still here, we've some good ones too, but 3 good dogs and a wildman on a bike can gather a lot more cattle in a day! Northern Rancher My condolences to your buddy. I've had to put down a couple of faithful campaigners and it's not a good feeling.

Sorry about the mechanization guys, there's me and my good lookin' partner here with 300 cows, open range, and no time to worry about my image. That went out the door when times demanded we run more cows to stay alive. I'd rather be a good cowMAN than a cowBOY anyway :-)
 
I kinda thought it went together.

Have you ever noticed cows don't run unless they're being chased?
I see lots of cows hurrying because a machine is behind them that
is going too fast.

But to each his own, I guess. 4-wheelers still work for a lot of people
and I think that's fine. Sometimes it's much better for the horses.

Good or bad, Mr. FH never wears a watch when working cattle. He does it horseback and he says "cows can't tell time, so why do I need a watch."
Our cows are excellent to work, BTW, and he NEVER yells at them to hurry them. Oh, yeah, in case you are wondering, they are range cattle.

But we know someone who uses a motorcycle and his cows are good
to work too, as I'm sure many who use 4-wheelers are as well. It's all in the operator.
 
That, and what each individual's cows are used to. Ours were always used to trucks or us doing it on foot. Bring in a horse, dog, or a quad, forget it! Heads up, tails high, and they were gone!
 
THanks Faster Horses, I like to think I am one of the last guys you mentioned, our cattle are good to handle whether it be 4 wheeler, saddle horse, or on foot. We've been fortunate to have good dogs for about 20 years now, these cows don't know they can get away. When I refered to "wildman on a bike" I was meaning what I take my Japanese Quarter Horse over and thru, not how I handle my cattle.

Horse, 4-wheeler, or foot...the most important thing is what Mr. FH knows...cattle work fastest when we work them at their pace and on their schedule. Took me many years and much frustration to learn that!!! :oops:
 
The good Lord hasn't presented me with a great opportunity to do it as often as I'd like, but I thought the main reason that anybody got involved in cattle was so that we'd have something interesting to do while horseback!! Now that I'm over 30 I have a bigger interest in the cattle business and less interest in cowboying. But the horse is still the tool that I most enjoy in the deal, and number two is the A.I. gun. 8)

Just watching and waiting for the chance to enjoy both of these more often!

We have way too much brush in most of our country for 4 wheelers, and I dont know how you would hear your curs bay one up. There is still alot of ranch country too rough for 4 wheelers
 
The younger generation here use both horses and 4 wheelers, but Dad still rides a black horse most of the time.

I think there is a time and place for both. I love horses. I love the way I feel at the end of day spent working cattle on a horse. However, with today's busier lifestyle sometimes mechanical is just easier and faster. Like last night I had worked all day in town got home did some chores and had to run through the heavies. A few years ago I'd have saddled a horse but I'd also have been home all day. Last night one turn of the key and I was on my way through the heavy lot.
 
Someday I'll figure out how to move these quotes around but for now I'll just have to refer back to you by name. TWOROPES, Around here its swamps or jackpine forest, we have trails cut but lots of times make my own. When I learn how to post pictures I'll post one of my well traveled 3 yr. old, registered JQHA bronc. If you're in sagebrush country I can see the advantage of being a'horseback. Been there, done it and loved it while it lasted. Once you've fought mosquitos, blackflies, bulldogs, deerflies, and MUD MUD MUD :-) you don't necessarily enjoy a long day in the saddle. At least my long winded steed can stay ahead of the hungry little buggers if I'm just checking things over CattleArmy, You just might get to like that mount that waits for you anywhere, only eats while you're using it, carries it's own flashlight....unless they're missing :cry: and still pitches a fit or creates a spectacular wreck to make life interesting!!
