We just traded up to a 9760 and we had a 9500 before this. I usually bale a couple hundred bales of straw every year to sell or keep for myself. The agronomist this year told me with all the straw out there it would be good to bale it all up. Have any of you guys seen how a baler will pickup the chopped up straw? Do you like the straw more or less from a walker combine?

We like the straw from the conventional combine. We ve actually went back to using a conventional after a few years of cursing and swearing  trying to bale the straw from behind the rotary.

If you have a hot day with everything being so dry when you combine, the rotary combine will chew the straw up so short, you'll find it very difficult to bale behind. We tend to bale the straw that is dropped later in the day when things get a little tougher.

It is all in the conditions that your combineing in and how the combine is set. Talk to someone that knows trhe machine and have them give you so pointers on how to set it and then wait untill the straw is a little tougher and you will be able to bale. It will also help if you run the tractor rpms at about 60% of PTO speed. That will keep the baler from grinding the straw up any more.
