I still ride a few colts and was wondering if a ballistic vest would be a good idea to help prevent broken ribs. Are they to hot were for longer periods of time?
Where can a person find slightly used ones?

You must be ridin' some awful sour colts if ya need a BULLETPROOF VEST to top them off!      I'd suggest patting them down real good prior to saddleing them up! Or possibly a gate sized metal detector to spot hidden weapons as they enter the round corral! The real answer is to pass more restrictive gun laws to prevent equine crime! Or you could just quit fallin' off. Maybe it's time to sit on the porch in a comfy rockin' chair with a cup of warm tea and let the youngsters knock the rough off of the colts!

got mine in welshes western store edmonton,used....i hear ya bout the ribs, mine been broken so often a sneeze will do it now.... 8)

Ty has a leather one with a neck roll if you want to try it out-he bought a new one without a neck roll that suits him beeter for bares and broncs. I can drop it off if we go to miles city rodeo in two weeks. It sure wouldn't hurt.

Do you think it would fit Ol' Big Moosey?

Get a 4 wheeler BMR, they don't hurt us old guys as often.

What got me thinkin' about it is the neighbor that rolled his 4wheeler twice in the last two years.

Trouble is the youngster aren't around much. My help moved to Michigan for a couple years and the other one works out making more money then he can ranching. That leaves me to start the colts. Most of them aren't that tough but ribs can be a bad deal.

Remember when guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. :cowboy:

I was just digging a spur about you getting too old!  I know of a certain has-been bullrider who quit bouncing years ago. Now he just goes SPLAT! Ribs are tough on a fellar and take a while to heal. A vest would be some protection i'd guess. My Dad was riding a colt out at the ranch years ago. Grandpa had built a neat big metal gate using old steel wheels off of a dump rake. Dad had got off to go through the gate when the flyboys came blasting by in the F16's about 300 fett off the dirt. The roan filly Dad was starting jumped sideways into Dad and smashed him into the gate, which didn't give much. Dad's ribs gave quite a bit! He was out there alone and had planned to ride a horse and bring the rest of the string of 5 horses home with him when he came. He stayed an extra day hoping somebody would pop in for a visit and save him the 40 mile ride. No such luck. He was one hurtin' Padre when he made it home. Ended up with 4 broke on one side and two on the other. He still carries a grudge against roan horses! Get a vest or wrap yourself in Charmin!

Your Dad had to be tough . Riding in right away would have been BAD waiting a day would have been WORSE..

Afraid the Charmin might come unraveled but it could come in handy other times. :D

Friend of mine north of here is in his early 60's and still starting colts. He is the shape of a beach ball and his balance ain't near as good as it used to be.
I asked him how he was getting it done now.

He told me..."small box stall and rafters I can reach if things get moving to fast." :D

:D :D - thats directed at leanin' H, Big Muddy rancher and gcreekrch.

NR - if one of the girls has one for me - you can drop it off at the same time :-) Mind you - with Ty's I could be a turtle, pop my head out of the shoulders ..... after the dust settles. :?

Ty's jr steer riding vest would probably fit you connie-I'mpretty sure that leather one will fit michael-it's the same as Dan Mortenson wore. I just got Ty back into wearing a vest he doesn't like being constricted at all but he got one cut out a bit for saddle bronc. they probably aren't a bad idea come to think of it-chalk one up for BMR.

Big Muddy I saw you on those man tracker episodes and it seems to me that you have a little bit of down pressure on the backs of your horses.  It may take a pretty strong colt to throw you.

Is that from all the good baking Miss Tam does. :)

I had a brother who fought bulls for a while (he figured he could start on the ground right side up and he always got paid out) but the Flak jacket saved his butt a few times. I think they would be a good idea on a young horse.
I always found I could hang on better the further it looked like I was going to have to walk...

BMR hardly throws a good shadow now a days lol. Sometimes the more prolonged the bronc ride the rougher the dismount-that's why I get flung off quick.

I tend to work on the same theory! Kinda like at a fire, the quicker you find the exit, the less likely you are to get trampled

Yeah I no but I couldn't resist the jab. I do remember the number of pies that were made during the man tracker episodes. (it always makes me hungry) :)
