Greetings, Unfortunatley, I am an electrical engineer by trade and therefore know very little about farming/ranching. However, my father has asked my to move to the farm (because his health is rapidly failing) and to take over the farming operations. One of the things he would like for me to do is to start a small herd of beef cattle. He has suggested BLACK ANGUS as the beef he would like me to raise. My question is, is BLACK ANGUS the most profitable type of cattle to begin raising? Or is there another (more profitable) type for my location (Illinois)? Any suggestions at all, about anything?

I thought my first post on this was useful.

I feel that all most any breed will be good for you. The main issue IMO is the quality of cattle that you have.

I see way to many people that get into the cattle and go get the cheapest miss bread cattle that they think "look good" and wonder why the offspring don't bring anything at the barn.

You just gotta watch out for a couple on here, you never know what they will say. :wink: :shock:

As for raising cattle there has been some good advise on here. Only thing I can think to add is check the animals temperment. High headed, snorty animals can be more trouble then they are worth.
Now I'm not saying a normally calm cow won't take you, but they are easier to work. Don't trust any of them.
Oh we raise Herefords so just a thought get your Black Angus cows and breed them to a good Hereford bull and get those black baldie calves.
