The ground is white and it is -14 Celcius, just perfect for growing grass. Good thing there is still two weeks feed in the stackyard. We have turned out on the 16th lots but not this year. :(

We turned out yesterday-there isn't much out there but my cows quit eating hay-we'll just hopscotch them from field to field-some gooid carryover where we've bale grazed.

Back in the late sixties a neighbor we still have ran out of hay in early April for his little bunch. My MIL was working at the store to help pay the bills. The neighbors 8 yr old daughter came into the store and told MIL that her Dad had turned the cows onto the range. MIL asked if there was any grass for them to which the little girl replied, "There's not much to eat but they have lots to drink!"

Were at least 10 days away from grass down here yet. It look's green but that's about it. Funny the more I learn about Canada the more I like your weather better than our's. It is snowing in Northern Mn this morning..

Minus 9 here this morning... I think the trees are gonna pull their leaves back in :?
I warned my wife not to put those bedding plants out yet, but of course why should I be believed?

Cold and slow here too. We usually move off banked grass onto fresh green around the 18-20th May. Looks a week behind at the moment but if we get some heat we may cut that to 5 days behind. Still have adequate banked grass for the cows but are rapidly running out of hay for yearlings.
Need heat badly but will soon need rain too - we got 1/4 an inch last night - the first rain since November ! We are very dry for this area, this time of year.

Green Feed is gone on the West side of the Hill here _ East side of the Hills West of us still have some color. 80° weather this weekend will end that _ California will be Brown and Golden until next November.
Feed looks good but will make for a Bad Fire Season…

Almost hate to post this. Grass is growing, albeit slowly. Have been grazing mostly stockpiled forage and headlands for 2 weeks. Lots of moisture and water. Mud on the packers of the Air Drill not so good though. I am in here posting because I was rained out again.

Gcreek, the grass is probably happy that it has a blanket for that unruly temp.

Well we had about 5 or 6 good growing days here between cold snaps that gave us frost hard enough to knock the grass back by half of what it grew on the warm days! Lots of moisture this spring so when it does warm up for real it should grow lotsa grass.

The pasture was slowly getting ahead of the cows but we turn the pairs out on pasture when the calves are about a week old so the numbers are quickly getting ahead of the growth. I am going to move them onto a new field as soon as I get off this thing. With these conditions there's not much chance of tripping on a hard cow pie. More like sliding into home!

I feel for ya! Around here it is perfect pneumonia weather for calves. It gets into the 70s during the day and dropped to 18 last night.  Atleast our grass is coming. But it better hurry up cause the moisture won't last long.

That's just crazy. What's up with all of these cold front's anyway? I just saw the local forecast here for Saturday night and the low's are to be UPPER 30's!!!!!

Oh well, at least everything is lush and green here, the trees are leafed out and I saw some corn poking up last weekend. Hopefully it won't get much colder that what is being forecasted Saturday night.

3 inches of snow that has stayed today (summer calving my A$$)
Cows are picking up the last of the swaths. Worst case we can turn into the bale grazing we never used. Actually, between swaths and grass we were pretty well done feeding about 3 weeks ago. Contrary to what I am told by forage professionals, god bless crested wheat.

Same here Kola. We coulda cut hay 3 weeks ago....if not for so much rain. 2 or 3 days between rains don't give the ground time to dry out enuff to get in the field...not to mention if you laid it down it'd get poured on. LOL
