Becoming a ranch hand

Well now that I've thought about agr college, I think it would be a good idea in the long run especially with me, a teenager with little experience. But I think that trying a ranching internship first would be a win-win, I'm getting a feel for the work and the life and at the same time the rancher is passing his skills down for the next generation. Then if I like it, I could invest in agr college. Even though internships don't pay well, I'm still getting the experience. Well that's what my guts telling me at least.

If you were ready right now, I'd let you ride around with me. You could open gates, cut twine, help feed hay, and do my fancy footwork that is hard for me to do right now (after having West Nile this past summer). I'd tell you everything I know (which wouldn't take too long), and you could listen if you wanted to, or yawn audibly and I'd shut up. :-)

Hello, I'm a junior in high school (17 years old), I'm determined to achieve my goal of becoming a cattle rancher, its been in my mind for a while now and I think about it everyday. I know a little bit about cattle ranching through reading a lot of books and I know quite a bit about horses. I also volunteer at a horse farm because I love being around animals, and like getting myself dirty, I have a very good work ethic and I try my best in school. I plan on getting a job in the near future at a local cattle farm. I'm reading as much as I can and learning as I go by listening to other people and asking questions. I understand that ranching is a tough lifestyle (cattle come first) and its nothing like any job around my home. But I have the will to do it. Anyway I just want to ask if any ranchers could give me any suggestions or advice on what I should do now and in the future. I'm also looking into agricultural colleges and ranching internships for after high school.

Thanks

Yes I will give you some advice.......stay in school make straight A's that will get you recognition and on the honor roll and likely a scholarship, make dam sure you make the Deans List study Medicine or Political science, work harder than everyone else.
That Ranching lifestyle you yearn will then become much more attainable.
Good luck

Ps Or just do like I did Marry some fat girl that has a Ranch
