Big 12 Conference commissioner Dan Beebe is working on an agreement to leave his position, the Kansas City Star reported Wednesday night.

The Star cited two sources with knowledge of Beebe's decision.

The Oklahoman reported Tuesday that the University of Oklahoma would commit to staying in the Big 12 only if the conference ousted Beebe and added regulations on ESPN's Longhorn Network.


Beebe was one of five BCS commissioners absent from the Collegiate Commissioner Association meetings Wednesday in Chicago, a source told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

The only BCS conference commissioner in attendance was Jim Delany of the Big Ten -- the only BCS conference not dealing with expansion.

The source said the CCA expects Beebe to leave his position, and former Big Eight commissioner Chuck Neinas to replace him.

Neinas told The Associated Press Thursday morning that he had not yet been retained. "If that happened, it would happen at the end of the day," he said.


Neinas has told the Big 12 he would accept the position of interim commissioner if, as expected, the Big 12 presidents offer him the job, a source close to Neinas told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Neinas runs a consulting firm and has worked with 10 of the original members of the Big 12.


"I feel for what is happening to Dan and to John Marinatto in the Big East," said Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson, whose league has lost multiple teams to the Mountain West and in 1998 was commissioner when the 16-team league split.

Benson said he has called for a halt to expansion until after Jan. 15 to allow the various conferences' focus to return to the playing fields.

"There is no rush to do more at this point," Benson said. "These conferences can take their time."

A teleconference among the school presidents was set for Thursday to discuss how to secure long-term calm in the Big 12, sources told Schad.

"The Big 12 is moving toward stabilization," one Big 12 athletic director told ESPN Wednesday afternoon.

TCU, however, is being mentioned as a possible Big 12 addition, a source told Schad, even though the Horned Frogs are scheduled to join the Big East in 2012.

And in addition to Texas not likely to be in favor of such an addition, one source said TCU likely would be bound by the same restrictions Marinatto is planning to apply to departing Syracuse and Pittsburgh -- a 27-month waiting period and a $5 million exit fee.

The teleconference and the league board of directors' planned meeting comes after the Pac-12 decided against expansion Tuesday night.

Beebe received a raise from $661,000 to $997,000 in 2009 before the Big 12's first near-breakup, when Colorado joined the Pac-12 and Nebraska left for the Big Ten. Beebe's contract was extended in November through June 2015.

Wrong, as usual, Jiggsy. TO TRIED to tell you what the writing on the wall was, but your head was too far up Texas' azz to see it. It took Nebraska & Colorado leaving, and then the within days collapse of the Big 12 for you to see what Texas' intentions were all along. Even the PAC 12 won't touch Bevo now, but the Big 12 is far from stable. The envelopes Texas hands out are always light.

No chance of that happening. Bevo has waaaaaaaay too much baggage for any conference to want them at this point in time.

Trust me, Jiggsy, if Nebraska had their own TV network and got a $300 million dollar deal from the ESPN and didn't want to share $, you and every other school in the conference, including UT, would be out for blood from us. Bevo does it and you should all lay down for them. Bevo WANTS to eat alone at the table. Any flies landing on a UT player are paying rent, believe that, Playah!

Yes. So that means Nebraska voted on a bad deal while writing the rules & forming the Big 12?

Had ESPN offered Nebraska the same deal they did Texas, Nebraska would have turned it down? Prolly not.

But Nebraska would have had no problem sharing the revenue, something that Texas has a big problem with.

You need to remember, Nebraska and Oklahoma built the big 8 to what is was, sharing with the other 6 schools who had limited financial success. When the SWC folded and the remnants came knocking at the door with their hat in their hand, Nebraska was under the impression that it was going to be just like before (revenue sharing, etc.) only with 4 more schools. Didn't turn out that way. It became all about Texas, all the time. You can't be equal partners in something when one of the partners is sandbagging and holding back money.

BTW, there were a LOT of 11-1 votes in the Big 12.

Texas is abiding by the rules as originally written and approved by the conference, including Nebraska.

The Big 12 splits revenue from its Fox Sports contract evenly, but only half of the money from its top-tier deal with ABC/ESPN goes into equal shares.

In other words, when a Big 12 team plays on ESPN, half their gross goes to the conference to be split equally amongst the remaining Big 12 teams, & the other half is kept by the televised team.

What is not fair about that? That's the way the SEC splits it.

The "Partial Qualifier" vote comes to mind. :wink:

On the partial qualifiers rule, Osborne said, "Where this rule can hurt you is if a player is considering Nebraska and Ohio State or some other school in the Big Ten." Osborne was an historically deft recruiter, but it's always difficult to recruit and get a top recruit to play in Nebraska. The weather in Nebraska is one thing, and the idea that there isn't anything to do in Nebraska is another. On that note, how does a Nebraska, a Kansas, or a Missouri compete with the Florida, Texas and California schools when it comes to top tier recruits? Why would one damage their ability to recruit in this regard? The NCAA does not limit the number of partial qualifiers a school can recruit, but each individual conference has this ability. The Big 12 enforced the strictest standards of any conference. They limited the number of partial qualifiers to one male and one female. The Big 10 does not have such standards. The Big 10 focuses their standards on a student that is enrolled in school. In other words, the Big 10 does not limit the recruit, until he is in school. At that point, if he doesn't get his grades up he won't play, but the Big 10 does not limit its schools in their recruiting procedures.

Short followup. Longhorn Network seems to be sucking the hind tit down this way. Even running commercials asking folks to call their cable networks as well as Dish and Direct to try and get them to carry it. Truth is nobody gives a damn about them except the grads from Teasip U.
