Exporters suffering soaring diesel prices and have to double price of Beef Trimmings
The peak body representing Australia's ship owners and shipping agents says exporters are being hit by massive fuel surcharges as diesel prices skyrocket.
Dry commodities exported by container, such as refrigerated meat, wine, wool, cotton, rice and some dairy products are facing emergency fuel levy increases as high as 90 per cent.
Llew Russell, from Shipping Australia Limited, says the additional fuel costs are exorbitant to both south-east Asian and European destinations.
"There's been a massive increase," he said.
"For example, in January it was $US173 per tonne and now in September 2005 it's $US329 per tonne, in other words a 90 per cent increase to Europe. For example, it is a percentage of our exports, it is a 70 per cent increase in the price."
